Creators of ‘Pokémon Go’ claim they aren’t spying on Google accounts, fixing issue now

Niantic Labs has issued a statement claiming they’re working now with Google to fix the full access permission Pokémon Go apparently has access to for iOS users who’ve signed into the game with their Google accounts.

The issue was first spotted by researcher Adam Reeve. Reeve said it would give the game access to things like user’s Gmail account, Google Drive, and the like. But he didn’t exactly test it out. Niantic has acknowledged though that this was happening to Pokémon Go users on iOS. But they are already working with Google to resolve this.

“We recently discovered that the Pokémon Go account creation process on iOS erroneously requests full access permission for the user’s Google account,” the company said in a statement it provided to Recode. “Once we became aware of this error, we began working on a client-side fix to request permission for only basic Google profile information, in line with the data that we actually access.”

Niantic’s statement also says, “Google has verified that no other information has been received or accessed by Pokémon Go or Niantic. Google will soon reduce Pokémon Go’s permission to only the basic profile data that Pokémon Go needs, and users do not need to take any actions themselves.”

So now, just sit back and wait for Niantic and Google to fix this issue. Thankfully they’re addressing the bug as quickly as they can.
