OnePlus 3/3T’s last OS update will be Android O

Bad news for OnePlus 3 and 3T owners who don’t use custom ROMs for your phones. OnePlus just announced on its forum that the upcoming Android O update will be the last major software update coming to these two devices. The company is turning its attention to the OnePlus 5 so we aren’t surprised about this announcement. The silver lining is OnePlus promises to continue releasing security updates to the devices for the “foreseeable future.”

The downside is, if you think about the release of the devices, both phones have had relatively short timelines and cutting off with Android O means it falls the standard two-year cycle for software updates. The OnePlus 3 came out June of last year, while the OnePlus 3T came out in November.

If we’re going to be technical about it, Android O will be the second major update to come to the OnePlus 3 but since it just came out, it does make you feel a bit shortchanged. It could a least get one more cycle.

If you use custom ROMs, this news might not be a big deal. But for the rest of you, we’re sorry to be the bearer of bad news. OnePlus has also said that its Open Beta Program will be moving to the OnePlus 5 once the two devices have been updated to Android O.
