Netflix picks up Mythbusters’ Build Team, Bill Nye for two new science shows

Mythbusters was a building block of my childhood. I remember sitting through entire Science classes where our teacher would just show us Mythbusters episodes that were relevant to the topic we were learning at the time. After more than 13 years on air, the myth-busting show on Discovery busted its last myth this year, leaving hosts Adam Savage, Jaime Hyneman, and The Build Team to their separate adventures.

The TV world is not ready to let go yet, though. Almost half a year after the show’s finale, Netflix has picked up The Build Team for a Mythbusters-inspired show called White Rabbit Project. The original Build Team consisting of Grant Imahara, Kari Byron, and Tory Belleci will once again use their prowess to investigate and bust myths all around the world and in history. Like its spiritual parent show, White Rabbit Project will be produced by Beyond Productions. It’s set to start streaming on December 9 this year.

Besides Mythbusters, Netflix has picked up another science hero from our childhood—Bill Nye the Science Guy! Starting early 2017, Netflix plans to launch an “experimental” talk show featuring Bill Nye called Bill Nye Saves the World. Unlike other talk shows, Nye will be talking about relevant scientific issues, its myths, and its detractors across its run. In classic Bill Nye style, the show will feature interviews, experiments, and quick science lessons meant to introduce the subject to a wider audience.  Bill Nye Saves the World will be Netflix’s second foray into the talk show world after Chelsea Handler’s Chelsea. The show is produced by Bunim/Murray Productions and is set to premiere Spring 2017.
