Lenovo launches 16MP VIBE Shot smartphone

Several years ago, everyone was best buds with a chunky DSLR, or at least someone who owned a chunky DSLR. Then, the DSLR fandom shrank in favor of the much smaller mirrorless camera. Now, a new trend is on the horizon with the rise of smartphone cameras. Smartphone photography has been a thing since smartphone camera resolutions crossed the threshold of 8 megapixels. In just a few years’ time, the capabilities of a smartphone camera have doubled with 16-megapixel shooters with professional level settings coming out.

Lenovo is one of the pioneers of the prosumer smartphone camera with the impending release of the Lenovo VIBE Shot. This new smartphone promises to combine the worlds of professional photography and a premium smartphone experience with a 16MP rear shooter and a Snapdragon 615 octa-core chip.

More than just superior resolution, the VIBE Shot has been engineered to be half phone and half camera. It has its own dedicated shutter button, which can be used to instantly activate the camera and take a shot at the same time. It has an on-board infrared auto-focusing, which Lenovo claims to focus on subjects twice as fast as a conventional auto-focus. In low light conditions, the VIBE Shot features the world’s first tri-color LED flash for more natural illumination. Even without the flash, low light photography is supported by a 16:9 BSI sensor and optical image stabilization.

Inside the camera app, the VIBE Shot gives photographer maximum control with the ability to adjust professional settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings. For simple point-and-shoot photographers, the camera’s manual settings can be easily toggled with a switch that changes between Pro and Auto modes. The Auto mode automatically detects the scene with a Smart Composition function and an on-screen point-and-shoot guidance to help users take the perfect shot. The 8MP front shooter is also capable of taking “pana-selfies” or a panoramic selfie which takes and stitches three different angles to take the widest selfies for big groups.

Underneath, the VIBE Shot is armed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 1.7GHz octa-core processor, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage. The phone’s memory is also expandable via microSD up to 128GB. It comes installed with Lollipop 5.1. It is available in Carmine Red and Graphite Grey, with a Pearl White version launching later this year.
