The Xiaomi T Series is all about bringing a flagship experience within an accessible price point. It also puts the spotlight on camera capabilities backed by Leica, particularly the telephoto system, which now spans across the device’s entire imaging setup. So if you love getting creative with how you frame your shots and experimenting with zoom, the 5x telephoto lens would surely be something to look forward to.
It also introduces Live Moment, which combines Leica’s iconic visual flair with dynamic storytelling. But what exactly makes it a well-balanced device? Read on to find out.
Design and build
I have a thing for designs that are subtle and subdued, which makes the Xiaomi 17T exactly my cup of tea — but with a twist. This time, it comes with a pop of color in muted Violet and Blue finishes. My review unit is the Violet variant, which I’m a huge fan of, though it’s also available in Silver and Opal White if neutrals are more your style.
The device gives a smooth and satisfying feel with its matte finish. It has some heft weighing 200g, which somehow adds to its premium feel. It measures 8.17mm in thickness so you can easily slip it in your pocket or bag without feeling bulky.

It also comes with IP68 dust and water resistance for added protection, especially for someone with activities that involve spending lots of time outdoors — be it shooting, playing golf, commuting, or running. A lot of my shots to test out the camera were taken during a drizzling day on the fairway, so this definitely came in handy.

Display

Up front, the Xiaomi 17T features a 6.59-inch AMOLED screen with up to a 120Hz refresh rate, 1.5K resolution, and 3,500nits of peak brightness. All of which work in tandem as I was able to navigate the interface smoothly, watch series on Netflix in crisp detail and punchy colors, and view outdoors without any difficulty.
I usually squeeze in some Netflix series in between my busy day to de-stress whenever I can, and this is how I was able to really appreciate the visuals rendered by the Xiaomi 17T. It exhibits deep blacks and good contrast, making the experience cinematic in the palm of my hand. I can attribute this to the HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support as well.
Since I’m cautious about my screen time, I’m thankful that the device is equipped with numerous eye protection certifications, including TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light, Flicker Free, Circadian Friendly, and Intelligent Eye Care.
Camera

For the main event, the Xiaomi 17T features a Leica-backed triple camera system, headlined by a 50MP (f/1.7) main sensor, paired with a 50MP (f/3.0) telephoto lens that offers up to 5x zoom, and a 12MP (f/2.2) ultra-wide lens. This setup sets the tone for the device’s camera capabilities, and it shows in real-world use.
Upon shooting with the camera, you immediately sense the distinct character that defines Leica. I’m a huge fan of the brand’s color profile, and I admire how it lends a cinematic feel to the photos I capture. The main camera also proved reliable, consistently delivering sharp images with beautiful colors and good dynamic range across various lighting conditions.

I was able to appreciate it even more while shooting with the 5x telephoto lens on the fairway during a round of golf. It showcased a great amount of detail in good lighting while producing rich contrast for added depth. The same can be said for shots taken at different focal lengths, whether in cafes, dimly lit restaurants, nature spots, or events.

Low-light performance also holds up well. It managed to preserve detail while keeping image noise under control. Night shots remain usable and not overly processed, making them ready for social media posting straight out of the camera.
If you’re a spontaneous person, the Leica Live Moment feature is a great addition to capture the entire moment leading up to the shutter click.

For taking selfies, there’s a 32MP front camera. The selfies I took showcased natural-looking skin tones and properly exposed backgrounds, whether shooting outdoors under bright sunlight or indoors in low-light conditions.
For video recording, the device supports up to 4K at 60fps, both in standard and Log video modes.
Performance
Powering the Xiaomi 17T is the MediaTek Dimensity 8500 Ultra, paired with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Throughout my time with the device, I was impressed by how it handled different kinds of workloads without a hitch.
I’m the type who keeps several apps and tabs open, especially when shooting, uploading, and posting on social media, while also responding to messages — that’s just expected in my line of work. And even so, it was able to sustain smooth performance as I switched between apps and multitasked with no lags or stutters.
As for gaming, it was able to hold its own too. I tried playing titles like Mobile Legends, and it has run smoothly for sustained periods. I didn’t encounter any frame drops as well, and the phone was able to manage heat well to allow me to do other tasks without waiting.

Battery
The Xiaomi 17T boasts a 6500mAh silicon-carbon battery, which proved dependable throughout my time with the device. It got me through the day without having to top up. My usage usually involves sending emails, browsing social media, taking photos and videos, and streaming on Netflix.
It’s quite impressive to have a sizable battery in this category without adding much bulk, so if my usage is lighter and doesn’t involve heavy shooting, it may even last up to two days.
When it’s time to juice up, the 67W HyperCharge can power the device from empty to a full charge in less than an hour. Thankfully, downtime doesn’t feel like much of a wait. The Xiaomi 17T also supports 22.5W wired reverse charging if any of your devices need it.
Verdict

The Xiaomi 17T didn’t cut corners. It manages to put its best foot forward on all fronts, offering the versatility most users look for in an upper-midrange device without the steep price tag. It features an elegant yet modern design, a beautiful display, more than capable performance, and long battery life paired with fast charging. And of course, the main event is the Leica-backed imaging system that gives it a strong edge over its competitors.
As for my experience with the telephoto lens, it was able to produce shots that I genuinely love and would post as-is on social media — no edits, no fluff. It’s quite refreshing to test a device that caters to the needs of both casual photographers and enthusiasts who want a reliable telephoto zoom experience.
Coming in at PHP 37,999 for the 12GB + 512GB variant, it feels like a well-balanced device that would suit most types of users looking for a highly capable smartphone, especially those who rely heavily on their phone’s cameras.
