Windows 11 is coming to PCs starting October 5

A couple of months after they gave a preview of their next-generation operating system, Microsoft has announced that Windows 11 will begin to roll out starting October 5 (October 6 in the Philippines). This is a free upgrade to eligible (legal) PCs and the date is also the start of availability for laptops and desktops with Windows 11 built-in.

In case you missed it, the new Windows 11 features a total redesign and is optimized for current trends. It now has softer edges and opaque windows, while the icons are moved to the center of the taskbar. Multi-tasking was also enhanced by having Snap layouts for multi-window viewing, and desktops that lets you have different sets of apps open on different desktop clusters. Both of which make single-monitor multi-tasking a lot better.

Most important improvement is the optimization of Windows 11 for mobile processors and modern inputs like touch, pen, and voice control.

Don’t expect an immediate notification on your taskbar when the said date comes. According to Microsoft, newer eligible devices will be given priority. This will then spread out to older devices and will continue until all those who opted for the free upgrade get the new operating system. They estimate that this will be done by mid-2022.

They are also preparing to re-launch the PC Health Check app that tests if your PC is compatible for the free upgrade. Alternatively, you can manually check if you can already upgrade by going to Settings > Windows Update > select Check for Updates.

For those who want to stay with Windows 10, it will be supported until October 14, 2025 with a new feature package coming later this year.
