ASUS has launched their latest innovation in the ZenBook UX435 — a 14-inch laptop with ScreenPad 2.0 Yes, ScreenPad not Touch Bar — so it’ll definitely be bigger and have more options and shortcuts available. ASUS managed to keep this innovative feature on such a small and lightweight premium device with a powerful Intel i7-1165G7 processor.
Build and design
As mentioned, the ZenBook UX435 is the world’s lightest 14-inch laptop, weighing only 1.19kg — even lighter than the 1.29kg Apple MacBook Air. The device comes in two spun-metal finishes of Pine Grey and Lilac Mist. On top of that, it has all the essential ports great for students, content creators, and business people: 2x Thunderbolt 4 USB-C, 1x USB 3.2, 1x HDMI, 1x audio jack and 1x Micro SD slot. It also includes a USB-HDMI connector inside the box.
On the top of its screen, it sports a 3D IR camera for quick login using Windows facial recognition. Up front it features a 14-inch FHD 1920×1080 NanoEdge display with a 92% screen-to-body ratio. In addition, it also has a secondary screen below its keyboard, which also functions as a trackpad — the ScreenPad 2.0
How to use the ScreenPad 2.0
The main highlight of the ZenBook 14 UX435 would be its ScreenPad 2.0 which provides a new way to interact with one’s device. Unlike Apple’s TouchBar that replaces the traditional function keys, ASUS offers a more interactive ScreenPad where one can multi-task and have a smartphone experience on the 5.65-inch trackpad. It might take some getting used to having a multi-purpose touchpad, but it’s worth getting to know once you get the hang of it. Here are different functions you can expect from the ScreenPad 2.0:
- Smoothly switch between apps
- Just drag an app/window onto the App Switch icon which looks like an arrow to move it from the main screen to the ScreenPad. To transfer an app/window to the main screen, simply tap the App Switcher icon on the ScreenPad.
- Switch modes from ScreenPad to trackpad real quick
- Just tap with three fingers to temporarily enable cursor mode or press the second button on the bottom left of the trackpad to have the cursor mode indefinitely.
- Add apps
- Swipe left to the last screen to add the selected apps open on the main screen to the ScreenPad
- Task Group
- Open all your usual tabs with just one quick on the ScreenPad. This task group is also customizable depending on what apps you want to open.
- App Navigator
- Tap the App Navigator icon in the control center on the bottom right of the ScreenPad to view and manage all open apps on both screens
- Convenience with MyASUS
- Whether you’re using iOS or Android, you can easily transfer files and even answer phone calls when the laptop is paired with the phone
- Handwritten notes
- With Handwriting, you need not buy a separate trackpad.
- Number key
- Just like other ASUS laptop models, the ScreenPad can also be used as a NumberPad to easily input numeric data.
- Powered by the new and improved ScreenXpert 2.0
Under the hood
Under the hood you will find an Intel Core i7-1165G7 processor that operates at a basic clock speed of 2.8 GHz. It’s paired with NVIDIA GeForce MX450 graphics. It also comes with 16GB RAM and large 1TB SSD which can handle virtually any work task you throw at it, and a high-capacity 63Wh battery for up to 12 hours of battery life on average. (The UX435 is also available with an Intel Core i5-1135G7.)
All in all, the ZenBook 14 UX435 can definitely boost productivity and mobility with its double screen and ultra-lightweight. It’s priced at P64,999 for the Intel i5-1135G7 and P79,999 for the Intel i7-1165G7. If you’re not looking for a double screen device, then the ASUS ZenBook 14 UX425 would be a good option but I’d say the ScreenPad 2.0 would be worth the extra bucks. It’s available in Pine Gray and Lilac Mist colors and come with FREE Pre-Installed Microsoft Office 2019 lifetime license valued at P6,995.
