Japanese global apparel retailer UNIQLO partners with HARIBON Foundation, the Philippines’ first and oldest environmental conservation organization, to help with its replanting efforts.

With its mission in mind of taking steps to make a positive impact on the planet, UNIQLO aims to reduce the use of paper through encouraging its customers to bring their own reusable bags when they shop in any UNIQLO store nationwide. Inking a long-term partnership with HARIBON, part of the paper bag charge proceeds will go to their Forests for Life Movement, their program that aims to regenerate Philippine forest ecosystems through rainforestation, a community-led initiative that uses native trees to bring back the original forest.

“UNIQLO and HARIBON Foundation share the same ideals in their dedication to sustainability and environmental conservation. We are thrilled to be partners with UNIQLO and strengthen its commitment to enriching the customer’s experience and our precious planet. Together, we can pave the way for a greener future and foster a harmonious balance between economic success and environmental well-being,” HARIBON’s Chief Operating Officer, Anna A. Varona shares.

In the first leg of the partnership, UNIQLO is set to donate over 5,000 native trees to be planted at the Mts. Banahaw-San Cristobal Protected Landscape located in San Pablo City, Laguna. This project will be done with the support of the San Cristobal Farmers Association. In 2022 alone, the movement planted a total of 31,848 trees across three restoration sites.

“HARIBON is the perfect partner for this initiative as we are both aligned in our mission to take steps in doing well for the planet. Our support for the Forests for Life Movement is our way of contributing to the cause of forest conservation and preservation of Philippine biodiversity. We believe that small steps such as this lead to bigger changes that overall make a positive impact,” says UNIQLO Philippines Chief Operating Officer Geraldine Sia.

UNIQLO has been active in the area of sustainability for over 20 years. As a global company, it aims to make a positive impact on the environment through creating responsible clothing, and using its resources to benefit people, the planet, and the society. All donations to HARIBON’s Forests for Life Movement will support the forests and communities for at least three years—a period that will determine the trees’ survival which will directly impact the surrounding community.
