Huawei Philippines has recently released what they claim as their most powerful innovative flagship phone in the industry — the Huawei Mate50 Pro. This Mate Series is the brand’s crown jewel and has always made a name for the itself. For this unboxing, we are going to uncover and experience a couple of newly introduced features — namely the Huawei Mate50 Pro’s Rock Solid Kunlun Glass and Ultra Aperture XMAGE Camera. Let’s see what else we’re about to find out.
Design and build
Up front we have a 6.74-inch OLED screen protected with Kunlun Glass that is also utilized on the back of the device. Yes, you read that right. It has a glass back that has been awarded a 5-star glass drop resistance certification from Switzerland’s SGS.
Looking closely at the back of the phone, we see a unique design that was inspired by the Clous de Paris pattern which originated in France. The device we’re about to test came in Black but it is also offered in Silver and a vegan leather back in Orange. Despite having a leather backing, the phone supports IP68-rated water resistance of up to six metres, allowing the phone to cope with wet and dusty environments.
The Mate50 Pro was built with a dual stereo speaker system and upgraded sound effect engine. This bass reinforcement algorithm is expected to provide more thump for music, films, and games.
Camera
This device made sure to distinguish itself with its matrix camera by splitting the camera lens. It is found on the upper central back of the phone just like its predecessors, except this time the camera was not co-engineered with Leica.
The Mate50 Pro packs a 50MP Ultra Aperture XMAGE Camera, 13MP Ultra-Wide Angle Camera and 64MP Telephoto Camera. The Ultra Aperture Camera comes equipped with an F1.4 large aperture, working with XD Fusion Pro and an increased light intake to set the image brightness, light and shadow details. It also has other features such as Night mode that captures photos with highly distinct bright and dark regions, even in dim environments. Portrait mode applies natural background blurring to allow the subject to stand out from its surroundings. The periscope telephoto camera supports up to 100x zoom range. The front camera meanwhile features a 13MP Ultra-Wide Angle Camera with a 3D Depth Sensing Camera and Gesture Sensor.
The “XMAGE” is Huawei’s very own mobile imaging brand which was released in July 2022. We’re going to find out in our full review whether or not this may mean good or bad news (so make sure to stay tuned!).
Under the hood
The Mate50 Pro is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 4G with Adreno 730 for its graphics. We can’t wait to test this out compared to its predecessor, which contained the Huawei Kirin 9000.
The Mate50 Pro runs on EMUI 13. This should offer a smooth user experience with enhanced cross-device collaboration capabilities with Super Device, which supports up to 10 types of smart device connectivity combinations. With Super Device, HUAWEI Mate 50 Pro can connect more devices such as earbuds, smart glasses, smart screens and laptops with a simple drag, bringing together an inter-connected intelligent service across devices.
The Mate50 Pro houses a 4,700mAh battery. Although this is not as big a battery as we expected due to to its large size, the slimness of the phone likely accounts for this. Furthermore, the Mate50 Pro has a Low-battery Emergency Mode which activates SuperEnergy Boosting when the battery level falls to 1%, which sustains 3 hours of standby or 12 minutes of calling.
