Toyota commences all-electric goals with the bZ4X SUV

A few years back, Toyota joined the fight for a cleaner world. They declared their plans to transition from an automotive into a mobility company that provides solutions with less carbon footprint. In the long run, they want to be carbon neutral by 2050.

A significant step towards this goal is the introduction of the bZ4X SUV concept. It’s an all-electric SUV that previews their new bZ lineup. The name stands for “beyond Zero” or cars that have more value aside from not having emissions. All cars under the bZ name would be battery operated and made in collaboration with other brands namely BYD, Daihatsu, Subaru, and Suzuki.

The bZ4X Concept is the first out of the new bZ range. It’s made with Subaru and features a new platform made by the two companies. It flaunts the expertise of Toyota’s electrification and Subaru’s experience with AWD technologies, aimed for a comfortable driving experience with impressive off-roading capability.

The exterior looks like most electric SUVs being launched lately – bold and sleek. What makes the bZ4X different is its interior which gives all passengers a great sense of space. The distinct steering wheel and instrument panel are placed lower on the dash, giving off great visibility for all occupants, especially for the driver. Drive-by-wire was also incorporated on the steering wheel which Toyota says eliminated the need for changing grip when turning.

Aside from the standard regenerative braking seen in electric vehicles, the bZ4X makes use of solar charging that allows the batteries to be charged when the car is stationary. It’s a clever trick to prolong the range of the car.

The bZ4X is part of Toyota’s plans to introduce 7 bZ models or a total of 70 electrified models by 2025. It will be made in Japan and China. There’s no production price target yet but Toyota claims sales worldwide will start by 2022.
