Huawei has always been renowned for its products, and specifically its hardware. Their newest entry-level smartphone, the Huawei Y5p (priced at P4,990) boasts a 5.45” FullView Display with an 81% screen-to-body ratio perfect for videos and gaming. It also uses AI facial recognition to unlock the device.

Powered by MediaTek octa-core processor that includes eight Cortex-A53 cores, with four cores operating at 2.0GHz and four running at 1.5GHz with 2GB RAM (+32GB storage). It has a 3,020mAh battery and AI Power Saving Technology, which is claimed to deliver 17 hours of video playback. This intelligent energy-saving feature further improves battery consumption efficiency.

The new Y5p, like the rest of the new generation of Huawei smart mobile devices, now uses the company’s own suite of downloadable apps called AppGallery.

We got to try out some of the Huawei Y5p and this is what we’ve learned about AppGallery so far.

  1. AppGallery is the official app market on Huawei smartphones and has been preloaded on Huawei devices since April 2018. It is currently the third-biggest app distribution platform globally, with 180 billion downloads and 390 million monthly active users worldwide, with more apps and games being added daily.
  2. There are three ways to download your top apps on your Huawei smartphone: Via Huawei AppGallery, via Huawei Browser, and via third party apps like APKpure and APKtaken. Instagram, Grab, Messenger, Mobile Legends and NBA 2k20 can all be downloaded via third-party apps.
  3. AppGallery makes sure that local apps receive some love alongside staples such as Facebook, Viber and TikTok. Among the newest local services to join AppGallery are Unionbank and SSS, whose official apps became available with the launch of Huawei’s latest P40 and nova 7i smartphones. Other banking/payment apps on AppGallery include GCash, PayMaya, BDO, and EastWest Bank. Online shoppers have Lazada, SM Advantage, Robinsons Rewards, Rustans FSP, and GlobeOne while news hounds have GMA, ABS-CBN News, and CNN. There is also a vast array of local apps for entertainment (i.e. ClickTheCity), government (PCSO, SSS), travel (Philippine Airlines), and gaming.
  4. Downloading apps from AppGallery is literally a rewarding experience. The robust Huawei AppGallery Rewards feature frequently gives out special points, app vouchers, gift packs, VIP privileges and other exciting incentives that distinguishes it from other app distribution platforms. Huawei Points, app vouchers, VIP privileges, among other rewards and gift packs are always available at AppGallery’s Gift Center.
  5. Huawei’s comprehensive four-layer detection security ensures all user data is contained within the device, and every app installation is screened for threats without exemption. AppGallery features strict security detection such as malicious behavior detection, privacy check, security vulnerability scanning and the manual real-name security check, to ensure that apps available on AppGallery are safe for all users.
  6. Huawei’s AppGallery has a “Wish List” so that users can actively list the apps they want and Huawei will endeavor to make those apps available as soon as possible and even notify them when the app is ready for download on AppGallery.
