‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ won’t be released until December 2017

If you thought the wait for the next installment of Star Wars was already tortuously long, well, the latest news from Disney is going to try your patience. The movie’s release will be pushed back from May 26, 2017 to December 15th of the same year.

The reasoning behind the move was the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens during its release in December last year, which was said to be a first release period for a Star Wars film. We’re not sure how that’ll affect local screening though as this will be very close yet again to the release of Metro Manila Film Festival movies.

What will be released in its stead would be the new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales film. And Star Wars Episode VIII will be going head-to-head against James Cameron’s long-awaited Avatar 2, which will open in the US the following weekend (we can’t say if the schedule will be the same here).

The yet-to-be-titled Episode VIII will start principal photography next month in London. It’s written and directed by Rian Johnson, Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman will produce, and J.J. Abrams, Tom Karnowski, and Jason McGatlin will executive produce.
