Perhaps taking a cue from The Force Awakens or just continuing on with their tradition of having a diverse cast, the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery series will have a female lead.
According to series creator Bryan Fuller, she’ll be a lieutenant commander “with caveats.” Speaking at the CBS All Access panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Fuller said, “We’re going deep into something that was for me always very tantalizing, and [we’re telling] that story through a character who is on a journey that is going to teach her how to get along with others in the galaxy. For her to truly understand something that is alien, she has to first understand herself.”
The story will be set a decade before the original series. It’s meant to bridge the gap between Enterprise and the original series. And Fuller wants to emphasize and celebrate diversity. There will be an openly gay character on this show as well.
Star Trek: Discovery is set to debut on CBS in January 2017 and while it could make its way to our local channels, Netflix also plans to stream the show a day after each episode airs in the US.
