Sennheiser sells consumer business to Sonova

Sonova – one of the leaders in hearing aid solutions, has officially acquired the consumer division of Sennheiser – makers of legendary audio products. It is still subject to regulatory approval, but it’s planned to be completed by the end of the year.

Back in February, Sennheiser shared that they were looking for new investors for their consumer line but they were also open to sell it off. They point to their underestimation of competitors like SkullCandy and Beats as reasons for losing market share, while also being late to the wireless game. Pressured from both style and wireless ends, their margins were under pressure and so they were looking for a partner to work and improve their consumer line.

The deal means Sonova will take over the consumer division but will retain the Sennheiser name. This includes their soundbars, headphones, wireless and true wireless products like the Momentum line, and their audiophile products like the HD 820.

Sennheiser is shifting its focus to their professional division that consists of microphones, lapels, and broadcast grade headphones among others.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better partner than Sonova for our Consumer Electronics business,” says Daniel Sennheiser, co-CEO at Sennheiser. “Sonova is a strong, well-positioned company. Not only do we share a passion for unique audio experiences, we also share very similar corporate values. This gives us an excellent foundation for a successful future together.”

How this will affect Sennheiser’s legacy products will remain to be seen but as for quality, for sure it won’t dip. Included in the deal are around 600 employees working for the German brand’s consumer line who will shift to Sonova.
