Review: ASUS Vivobook Pro 15 OLED

Content creation is at its peak, and we can only expect for it to continue to flourish in the years to come. That said, if you’re an aspiring creator, this calls for a high-performance laptop with features dedicated to let your creative juices flow. Top considerations one must include in their search are display quality, processor speed, and graphics card performance.

It’s very timely that ASUS recently introduced its new line of creator laptops; one of which is the Vivobook Pro 15 OLED (M6500). It’s meant to entice users with its industry-leading display and top-tier performance. Find out what the rave is all about!

Design and build

At first look, you’ll notice that the Vivobook Pro 15 OLED possesses an understated elegance with its sleek matte finish. An elevated portion is found in the corner of the lid with the silver engravement of the brand and model. True to its name, the Quiet Blue colorway showcases a very subtle shade of blue.

Altogether, it embodies a minimalist yet robust design language, which personally I’m more drawn into. Very fitting for most professionals who would like to keep it simple as well.

Given the anticipated power it packs under the hood, it’s not surprising that it also came in a relatively heavy package, weighing 1.8kg with 18.9mm thickness. On a better note, most of its other design features positioned ergonomics front and center.

The power button conveniently works as a fingerprint scanner to access your laptop. It’s highly commendable for doing its job swiftly.

A smooth and satisfying feel is what the mega-sized touchpad provides. Situated above is the chiclet backlit keyboard. Some might be in favor of the presence of a numeric keypad on the right, but this led to cramping up the rest with very minimal spacing in between. Nonetheless, the key feel and travel (1.4mm) were pleasant enough to compensate for the aforementioned.

Located at the top center of the screen is the FHD Webcam with 3D noise-reduction technology to improve image quality amid low-light conditions. Since cybercrime is rampant, it’s truly heaven-sent that the webcam has a built-in privacy shutter. It’s the necessary layer of protection to avoid falling victim to these crimes.

I’ve always wondered how I can take advantage of the 180-degree hinge, but the purpose might be as uncomplicated as providing users the flexibility they need. This strips off the worry of accidentally damaging the hinge while searching for a comfortable position. Another scenario where you’ll find this orientation useful is in the workplace. Perfect example is when you lay it flat on your desk while presenting to clients right across you.

And finally, the abundance of ports will certainly please casual and high-performance users alike. On the right, you’ll find the power connector, USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port, HDMI port, USB-C port, microSD card reader, and 3.5mm headphone jack. Meanwhile the opposite side houses two USB 2.0 ports.

Display

Display quality should be at the forefront if your profession is heavy on photo and video editing, graphic designing, and the like. You need to be very particular about detail and color accuracy – like your life depends on it. Thankfully, the Vivobook Pro 15 OLED is geared up for this kind of intricacy.

Not only will you enjoy the wide screen to its entirety with the 16:9 aspect ratio, but you’ll also find yourself indulging in a visual feast. Mighty and proud, it boasts a 15.6-inch 120Hz OLED HDR display, supporting up to 2880×1620 resolution. Even in bright settings, it has great screen visibility. And I doubt it will be a problem with 600 nits of brightness. Since it’s TUV Rheinland certified, long hours on screen won’t be too.

ASUS stirred up the perfect recipe for a superior front panel – its certified VESA DisplayHDR 600 True Black and Pantone Validated, with an ultrawide color gamut of 100% DCI-P3. And yes, in person, it’s nothing short of amazing – from the buttery smooth experience down to the vivid and sharp display. Visuals pop because of the great contrast ratio; you get a visual of this in the deep blacks.

As a creator you’d want your content to appear as intended on every handset; the slightest inconsistency can be irksome. Thus, it’s an absolute delight that the Vivobook Pro 15 OLED excels in color accuracy. Not to mention, colors appear vibrant regardless of brightness settings.

Often, we end up buried with tasks and deadlines that we don’t have time to hit the theaters. Fortunately, the Vivobook Pro 15 OLED might just give us the next best thing. It didn’t disappoint – the film buff in me was ecstatic.

To take it up a notch and provide an all-embracing experience, immersive visuals were paired with a Harman Kardon-certified Dolby Atmos sound system.

Performance

What appeals to creators apart from the stunning visuals they see, is what they don’t see – everything under the hood. It’s imperative that the rest of the hardware can keep up to get the most out of your device.

ASUS powered Vivobook Pro 15 OLED with an equally capable processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H. It runs on 16GB of RAM with 512GB SSD. Also on board is a dedicated graphics card – NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 – to further enhance visuals and overall performance. You’ll reap full benefits as you work seamlessly on graphically demanding tasks such as 3D rendering and video editing. Safe to assume the laptop can lend itself very well in the gaming arena.

If you’re eyeing this laptop for creative purposes then you’re in for a treat. The package comes with a free three-month subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud upon purchase. This will equip you with apps and tools that can help you pave the creative road right away.

Since it’s designed to bear heavy workloads, it became more apparent how exceptionally well it executes day-to-day office tasks, multi-tasking especially. Opening several windows, all while launching apps, felt like a breeze.

Holding that much power requires an efficient cooling system. Equipped with ASUS IceCool Plus thermal technology, the Vivobook Pro 15 OLED was able to sustain the same level of performance without any hitch. The last thing creators want is to be bogged down by long render and export times due to heating issues. In addition, engaging in intensive tasks like video editing will receive some benefits too.

ProArt Creator Hub wonders

Just when you think it couldn’t get any better, this laptop is also built with a tool to make the lives of creators so much sweeter. The ProArt Creator Hub software allows you to choose Fan profile, recalibrate the display color, and create task groups to open multiple apps simultaneously. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Battery

Battery life might not be its strongest suit (70Whr battery) and it can use a boost in this department. Charging time took nearly 2 hours to reach full capacity. And with light-to-moderate use it can stretch up to 7 hours. However, I believe it’s an acceptable trade-off considering its powerful capabilities.

Verdict

The Vivobook Pro 15 OLED proves to be a powerful arsenal to tackle all your creative endeavors. It marries superb display quality with superior performance, making it stand out in both departments. With features dedicated to creators and ergonomics done right, you get great value considering its price point. Starting price is PHP 67,995.
