Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G: A massive battery in a durable midranger

In a time of skyrocketing prices thanks to increased memory demand from artificial intelligence, the need for a well-packaged, great-value product that will last long is the only way to get consumers to upgrade to the latest models available.

And at least for the Chinese, brands like Redmi are offering midrange smartphones like the Note 17 Pro 5G with a couple of key features that will make consumers double-take when they see the initial spec sheet and marketing material.

The main draws of the smartphone include its durability, the massive 8,340mAh battery inside, and the big and bright display. The Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G is available in three colors: Sky Blue, Purple (as reviewed), and Black, alongside three different variants: 8GB+256GB for Php 23,999, 6GB+256GB for Php 22,999, and this one, the base 6GB+128GB configuration for Php 20,999, which has a lot to offer for its asking price, with the usual set of trade-offs from a midrange device.

BUILD 

This fairly large smartphone has a similar footprint to an iPhone Pro Max, with a height of 163.45mm, a width of 78.27mm, a thickness of 8.6mm, and a weight of 223g. Plus, you get an included silicone case as part of the package.

The construction is mostly plastic that looks like premium materials, hence the satin finish on the sides and the matte rear. Utilizing plastic helps keep the weight and costs down and also grants it a 2.5m drop-resistance rating alongside its multiple ingress protection (IP) ratings of IP66/IP68/IP69/IP69K.

Much like every other Android phone out there that isn’t a foldable or an Ultra phone, this features flat edges with a microphone hole and IR blaster up top, your volume controls and power button on the right side, and your speaker grilles, USB port, microphone hole, and physical SIM slot beneath, also with eSIM support.

DISPLAY AND MEDIA

The display, on the other hand, is covered by a sheet of Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 with a pre-installed plastic screen protector. Underneath lies a 6.83-inch AMOLED panel, touting a resolution of 1280×2772 and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

It’s a very bright and clear panel with colors that pop really well, one of the brighter ones that you can find on a mid-range device. It has a peak brightness of up to 3,500nits, making it very easy to use under direct sunlight. This is typical of a modern smartphone nowadays, but there’s one aspect that I found really nice with this display, and it’s how easy on the eyes it is. 

In a nutshell, OLED displays control their brightness by flickering their panels rapidly on and off, and this is called PWM dimming. IPS LCD panels since they use DC dimming, which controls backlight brightness evenly instead of using rapid flickering to lessen eyestrain.

Popular devices like iPhones and Samsung Galaxies have PWM rates of around 240 to 480Hz, which still isn’t enough to mitigate the eyestrain that it can cause; hence why the Redmi Note 17 Pro’s panel has a much, much higher PWM rate of 3,840Hz and the ability to use DC dimming. In fact, the “Reading Mode” options are more comprehensive, allowing you to insert a texture that decreases the contrast of items on screen, making it a lot easier to read, especially in the dark.

Other features include Wet Touch Technology 2.0 that touts better accuracy with wet fingers, a high touch sampling rate, and also an optical fingerprint scanner towards the very bottom of the display.

In fact, it’s quite enjoyable to consume media on this device, with the bright screen and the loud stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos upscaling. Of course, don’t expect much bass from this device, but they’re clear and get plenty loud, with a built-in volume booster.

CAMERA

There are only three sensors on this camera system: a 50MP wide sensor with a 26mm f/1.8 equivalent lens and a 1/2.76” sensor with OIS, an 8MP ultrawide sensor with a 15mm f/2.2 equivalent lens and a tiny 1/4.0” sensor, and finally, a 16MP selfie shooter.    

Photos are adequate from the main sensor, with broad daylight shots providing a decent amount of detail from both sensors, but with oversharpening evident and not-so-excellent dynamic range. Noise starts to creep in easily, making low-light shooting not the easiest task to do, but there’s one bigger issue: it’s the noticeable delay when launching the camera and pressing the shutter button.

I’ve missed several key moments after hitting the shutter button, only to realize that the photo has been taken half a second after my finger hits the shutter, regardless of lighting conditions.

Oddly enough, you cannot adjust the resolution of the photos that’s capped at 14MP for the wide and 9MP for the ultrawide, and videos are capped at 1080P at 30fps, which is a head-scratcher considering there are other midrange devices that can shoot better video.

A consolation prize would be that there are manual controls and some higher-end photography features like focus peaking, filters, and overexposure alarms that trickled down from Xiaomi’s flagship offerings, allowing you to get creative with the device.

BATTERY 

Normally, this is something that would be left towards the end of the review, but this is something special, as this is one of the very few phones on the market to currently use a high-capacity silicon-carbon battery. In a frame that would usually hold 4,500-5,000mAh cells, this manages to go all the way up to 8,340mAh, be able to charge up to 67W (provided you use the included charger), and a reverse wired charging speed of up to 22.5W.

There’s no getting around how the large capacity would allow you to easily nail two days of usage. In my case, I ran it HARD. I left most of the battery-draining settings enabled (haptics, 120Hz refresh rate, 5G cellular data, Bluetooth, always-on display, to name a few), used it as a portable hotspot, doomscrolled, blasted music from the speakers, took photos, and that would get me around 1 and a half days of heavy usage.

PERFORMANCE AND OPERATING SYSTEM

The Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 chip, which is a midrange Octa-core processor, backed by Xiaomi HyperOS 3, based on Android 16. You have multiple RAM and storage configurations available, ranging from 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage to 512GB of UFS 4.1 storage, and 6GB to 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM.

Now, I’m not sure if it’s an issue limited to my specific retail device, but the performance on this one is a big hit-or-miss. My usage is well past the stages of Android indexing, and I have done a factory reset to give the software a fair chance of starting fresh.

This is the base 6GB+128GB configuration, and the general performance is fine for light tasks such as navigating the interface, messaging apps, and streaming videos. However, the moment you start multitasking, like streaming music and using social media apps, or doing anything heavier like taking photos, the phone starts to slow down and chug.

Enabling the memory extension setting to add up to 6GB of virtual RAM does help out with the multitasking issue. Still, when basic, built-in applications like the camera and even Android Auto take their sweet time to work during daily tasks, well, it’s something that isn’t acceptable for a midranger in 2026. I hope that this can be rectified in a software update, or any HyperOS optimizations Xiaomi will deliver.

As for gaming, the most you can go is medium titles like Clash of Clans or 2D-based graphics. You can play titles like Honkai: Star Rail just fine,assuming you turn the graphics all the way down, but heavy games like Zenless Zone Zero are pretty much slideshows.

However, as “inspired” as Xiaomi’s HyperOS is by iOS and the insane amount of bloatware and ads that pop up (a price to pay for a midranger), some credit can be given where it’s due. Animations are smooth and slick, and there is a LOT of customization available, allowing you to change up almost every aspect of the OS– provided you have time to sit down and tinker.

The general interface is also very smooth (when the device isn’t chugging), and it surprisingly plays very nicely with the Apple ecosystem, having little touches like the personal hotspot appearing as if it were coming from an iOS device, or how it also supports a seamless AirPods experience, allowing for native features without an external app.

It still nails the basics of being a phone just fine, getting great signal strength for both cellular and Wi-Fi signals inside buildings, which can probably be attributed to the mostly plastic construction of the device.

VERDICT

The combination of a big battery, durable build, and a bright and punchy display is something that flagships only used to offer, but these aspects trickling down to a midranger makes it worth getting as something that you’d want to last long.

For Php 20,999, it’s a bit on the pricey side of the midranger segment; but if you value the aspects that make the Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G attractive for you, it’s worth taking a closer look at it in person.

Though, if you have the extra cash, we highly recommend springing for a variant with more storage and RAM, as it offers faster storage and memory that could further extend the device’s usable lifespan and could potentially alleviate any performance issues that you’ll run into.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro 5G is a midranger with a focus on durability and longevity, and those aspects certainly shine through, especially with its build quality and extremely large battery. If cameras and gaming aren’t your main priority, this is a solid phone to consider, especially if you hate carrying around extra items like a power bank.
