OPPO Find X: All about the screen (and motorized hidden cameras)

Even with little knowledge of the smartphone industry, you probably know that notched displays are in. We’ve seen most major manufacturers use them. We’ve seen a lot of opinions on them. And while we don’t see them going away anytime soon, some brands are taking a chance at giving consumers an almost all-screen experience without having to put notches on their devices.

First out the gate we had the Vivo Nex, which had its front camera hidden with a pop-up mechanism. Now, OPPO seems to be take cues from this with the Find X. This notch-less, almost all-screen phone hides not just the 25-megapixel front-facing shooter but also its dual 16-megapixel and 20-megapixel rear cameras as well as its 3D facial scanning system. By employing a motorized system to hide away the cameras and sensors, the Find X is able to achieve a 93.8 percent screen-to-body ratio for its 6.4-inch 1080 resolution OLED display. OPPO claims it shouldn’t take too long to “summon” the camera, it’ll take 0.5 seconds for the camera to pop up. There is no under-glass or traditional fingerprint sensor here. If you’re looking for biometric authentication, you’ll need to use the 3D facial scanning system OPPO calls O-Face.

OPPO introduces its own take on the Animoji, and they’re calling the 3D Omoji. It’ll also let you create your own cartoon avatar that you can use as GIF emojis or for videos or with any chat app.

In terms of looks, the Find X reminds us of the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus with its glass front and back, curved sides, and rounded corners. This dual SIM smartphone carries all the specs of a 2018 flagship smartphone with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, 8GB of RAM, up to 256GB storage, 3,730mAh battery (with OPPO’s VOOC fast wired charging technology), and Android 8.1 Oreo skinned with OPPO’s Color OS.

The Find X’s price at launch is at 999 euros (approx. P61,700) and is said to be available starting August. Now, whether this really premium phone makes its way here is a question we can’t answer at the moment. It’ll be available in Bordeaux Red and Glacier Blue.
