New Final Fantasy VII Rebirth trailer drops; previews the darker, action-packed sequel

Perhaps there might not be another game to drop this year that’s as anticipated as Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Following the first game’s immense success, Square Enix is finally set to release the sequel this year, and it has now dropped the newest trailer.

There’s a lot to take in with just the one-minute clip. It hints at a dark timeline for this second game, which, if you’re familiar with the original FFVII story, includes the death of a certain very-important and beloved character.

The trailer opens with Sephiroth in frame, flames behind him, and Cloud down on the ground. It skips abruptly to what appears to be present-day Midgar engulfed in smoke, then just as quickly it shows Cloud being carried by none other than Zack himself. More trips down memory lane for Rebirth, perhaps?

There’s also more screen time for Red13 and, interestingly enough, Yuffie. At this point I’d like to raise some theories about Remake and Rebirth having slightly similar storylines. At the end of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Biggs was shown to have survived, whereas in the original version he supposedly died. This got fans wondering if Jesse was alive, too.

Now, Yuffie having very significant screen time in the trailer might mean she’ll no longer be a secret character but instead be an integral part of the main story. Hmmm.

That possibility then brings us to another: if they did change the storyline, does this mean other characters like — spoilers be damned — Aerith will get to live? Farfetched, but hey, one can dream.

In addition to all that, Square Enix also gave us a sneak peek at the combat system. It appears there’ll be new combo moves available in Rebirth, as suggested by that Aerith-Cloud connection in one of the battle previews.

Like I said, it’s just a minute, but there’s a lot to digest. We suggest you keep watching the trailer over and over and tell us some of the specific, must-note details you encountered.

Before we let you go, we’d just like to remind you that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth drops on February 29, 2024 as a PS5-exclusive. Who’s excited? We know we are.
