Netflix wants to attract professional translators with standardized test

With Netflix expanding worldwide, it understands it can’t rely on the English language to reach a wider audience. But in order to attract the non-English-speaking viewers, the service needs quality subtitles to cater to them. And so the streaming service wants to put the professional translators it employs—and those interested to work with them—to the test, literally.

The streaming service has developed a new standardized test called HERMES. To help produce quality subtitles for the service, this test pays close attention to phrases and idioms that are unique to specific languages and culture. There are many combinations of these questions so the test varies. Once translators take the test and get their scores, they might then be eligible for future projects for Netflix. 

Those who sign up and qualify will be given a unique number that will be tied to the subtitles done by specific translators. Netflix will use this to evaluate the performance of the translators and use this as a basis to assign future projects to them. Think of it like the recommendation feature for viewers but this time it’s matching translators with content they’re great at translating.
