MWC 2017: OPPO raises bar for smartphone photography

Already wildly known for its selfie-centric phones such as the F1, F1 Plus, and F1S, OPPO continues to shake all things camera with an announcement during this year’s Mobile World Congress: the 5x dual camera zoom technology.

In a nutshell, this proprietary technology allows for five times closer zoom without the grain and loss of details. OPPO said that this technology has been developed through research for almost over a year. The incredible zoom rate and quality is achieved through a periscope-style dual camera setup to divert light through a prism and into the telephoto lens set at right angle to the wide-angle lens. This further lessens—if not totally eliminates—the physical bump caused by thick lens protruding from the body of the phone.

OPPO also addresses another problem when it comes to zooming: difficult focusing. The new 5x zoom technology incorporates a new Optical Image Stabilization system that allows both the lens and the prism to sense vibrations and adjust in real time. This additional tech allowed for 40% improvement in stabilization.

While the company did not reveal a new phone in any price segment, it is expected that the latest OPPO flagship would sport this technology and, according to Vice President and Managing Director of Mobile Business Sky Li, reflect the “dedication to delivering on what our customers want and need—to take beautiful and clear pictures.”
