MWC 2017: Nokia shows no slowdown with major announcements

After unveiling the long-awaited Nokia 3310 plus introducing to the public the Nokia 3, 5, and 6, the brand under HMD seems to bank on this momentum to speed up market visibility and growth. In fact, Nokia made three major announcements alongside the product launch at the Mobile World Congress 2017.

Snake comes to Messenger

Because it’s expected that Nokia 3310 will sell like crazy once it’s released, the brand might have introduced this alternative: play the fabled Snake game in the convenience of your own smartphone. Featuring new colors and a revamped logo, Snake has begun to roll out to devices. If you happen to not be able to play the game immediately, don’t fret. The update may take a few days tops.

Withings transforms to Nokia

After completing the acquisition, Withings devices will now carry the Nokia brand name. The French smart devices maker is known to integrate health into the product but TechCrunch claims that the company has always had some sort of a niche market instead of a general household name. The union and adoption of the Nokia brand name could actually help Withings get into the market despite setting the sun to the old name because “Nokia is a powerful global brand that is synonymous with innovation, connectivity and great design,” according to Nokia’s VP of Digital Health Cedric Hutchings.

All existing Withings line will then roll out as Nokia. The new owner also plans to update the Withings Health Mate app to provide a HIPAA-compliant Patient Care Platform 360-degree view of health.

Nokia inks partnership deal with Xiaomi

Nokia is providing Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi with fiber-optic network to link to its seven data centers in Beijing. This effort is based on Nokia’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) with data center interconnect (DCI) solution, and allows for the provision of a “private cloud” for Xiaomi.

This makes Xiaomi stand alongside financial institutions, healthcare providers, and webscale companies that avail of Nokia’s service. On the other hand, Nokia gains from this deal after announcing that it is expanding its services and revenues in network sales outside the smartphone market.
