Meizu’s Ubuntu OS

The Chinese gadget manufacturer has been making noise in the local tech scene with its attractively-priced Android products, but for this year’s Mobile World Congress, Meizu teased a totally different offering: their Ubuntu-powered smartphone. Ubuntu is an operating system like Windows and Mac OS, but has a more low-key following, most of which are developers and software engineers. Ubuntu has formed a solid backbone with the world’s IT industry and is almost ready to make the transition to the mainstream.

Meizu MX4

The MX4 from Meizu made waves in MWC 2015, thanks to it running something different from the usual Windows 8.1, Android, and iOS platforms. Despite the actual phone being a few months old already, there’s no denying it is something to take note of thanks to its specs and of course, the Ubuntu OS. A MediaTek MT6595 chip lies at its heart, with quad core 2.2 GHz Cortex A17 and quad core 1.7 GHz A7 processors providing octa-core tandem or separate goodness. It has a 5.36 inch Sharp/JDI display with a 1920 x 1152 resolution, Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and a 20.7 megapixel back camera. The phone’s backside is made of plastic, but painted to give it a metallic, premium feel. The device runs Ubuntu’s version of a mobile OS, and is something totally new in the scene. It may be a little niche, but it never hurts to have another OS in the market, and given Meizu’s track record of pricing, will be accessible for more adventurous smartphone users.
