Look: Uniqlo’s 2020 Spring/Summer Collection

Inspired by art, nature, and color, Uniqlo’s 2020 Spring/Summer Collection encapsulates the essence of Lifewear by imagining daily life in eco-sustainable cities and turning it into stylish, wearable pieces. It features design cues from three categories: outdoors, work and craft, and art and design.

The Wonderful Outdoors

In urban cities, we see the coexistence of manmade structures with nature. Take the beautiful city of Amsterdam, which have manmade canals interspersed with houseboats. The collection celebrates the functionality of these modern cityscapes with clothes that can be taken out for a stroll in the city then straight to the beach or waterfront.

The outdoors collection is comprised of pieces that protect you from the elements. Perhaps the most defining items are the parkas that you can layer over your clothes like the BLOCKTECH variant which keep out wind and rain while the light padded ones provide extra warmth.

Back to Basics

Urban farming has become a mark of a sustainable lifestyle. For city-dwellers who have limited space, rooftops can be transformed into a green space where one can grow their own organic produce. Aside from its current trendiness, implementing this across a city can significantly impact the reduction of the collective carbon footprint.

The Work and Craft collection draws inspiration from this with garments made from organic materials that are both functional and chic. Uniqlo has focused on creating clothes that you can wear to work and then go home to tend to your garden. The collection features bright colors and relaxed styles.

Creative

Minimalist looks and long and lean silhouettes define the Art and Design collection. The mineral inspired palette invokes bright springtime and sunny summer days.

Tailored pieces that remain breathable are the highlight of this collection with trench coats, Kando jackets, and slim-fit tailored jackets.

 Uniqlo U 2020

Alongside the main collection is the Uniqlo U line from the Paris R&D center. With a casual yet refined European flair, the women’s line features masculine silhouettes and new details. The line features soft colors and airy fabrics perfect for the warming weather. The men’s line, on the other hand, reconstructs authentic men’s items in a modern style. It features outfit coordinates such as guayaberas and trench coats and pieces that add a touch of sophistication while staying comfortable.

JW Anderson x Uniqlo / Hana Tajima for Uniqlo

Uniqlo also debuted the Spring/Summer collaboration with British designer JW Anderson. Themed “British Country Style” the collection reinvents traditional patterns like gingham check, patchwork, and stripes into a distinctly contemporary style.

New York-based designer Hana Tajima also released a collection featuring universal designs with attention to fine details and comfort. Centered on a light yellow color palette, the pieces are bright and full of life. The garments are also designed in such a way that it adapts to the wearer’s form, stemming from the idea that every woman should feel confident in her own body—regardless of its shape.
