LG goes big with new TVs

Bigger, better, and clearer seems to be the goal for LG televisions in 2015. The South Korean tech company unveiled its latest lineup of TVs for the Asian market at the LG InnoFest 2015 held in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia on February 4.

Curves are in
LG doesn’t just seem to be pushing 4K resolution for its TVs; they want us to appreciate curves, too. Various brands have been pushing curved TVs and saying they provide a more immersive experience. While the necessity of curves on televisions is still debatable, we can’t help but appreciate how good looking they are.

There are curved and flat panels from the new lineup of OLED TVs but we want to focus on the curved displays. One of the lines is appropriately called Floating Art Slim Curved 4K OLED TVs with sizes ranging from 55 inches to 77 inches. As its name suggests, they appear to be floating off their bases with their transparent stand. LG hopes this will take away any visual clutter you may see so you can focus on the screen itself. And we have to admit, it’ll make a good conversation piece, even if the display is shut off.

These TVs are equipped with proprietary WRGB OLED and Optimized True Color technology, which essentially means you get more life-like colors and better contrast even at wide viewing angles. Audio is courtesy of a 4.2 channel speaker setup built with LG’s Ultra Surround System. It is meant to give a deep, rich sound to match the quality of the display.

The bigwigs
Also making their appearance at LG InnoFest are the 98-inch Ultra HD TV and the company’s latest and biggest TV, the 5K 105-inch Curved TV. We’ve seen the 98-inch before and as imposing and eye-catching it could be, the 105-inch is a different beast altogether.

As a 5K display, it gets a 5,120 x 2,160 resolution and CinemaScope 21:9 aspect ratio. This monster of a TV also has 7.2 channel speakers and LG’s user-friendly and colorful webOS interface.

We’ll be seeing this 5K TV in the Philippines pretty soon. And when it hits stores, you can expect the price to hit the P2-million mark.

UHD push
For the 4K, non-curved TVs, LG is introducing a new ColorPrime line. Aside from the 3,840 x 2,160 resolution, these TVs are built with In-Plane Switching (IPS) panels, which mean they can render images to as close to the original quality with great viewing angles. The ColorPrime series also comes with True Black Control local dimming technology for improved blacks and contrast. They can also upscale your standard definition, high definition, or Full HD content to as close to 4K as possible.

Adhering to LG’s Ultra Slim concept, these Cinema Screen displays also have slimmer bezels to keep your focus on whatever it is you’re watching. Audio is courtesy of Harman/Kardon.

Notably, the high-end 65UF9500 comes with an Auditorium Stand, which is built to centralize sound and fire audio towards the viewer instead of to the back wall or floor.

webOS update
The new TVs from LG are also getting an updated version of webOS. The new webOS 2.0 is designed to give a simpler, more intuitive experience for its users. Its user interface has been improved. It has a faster boot time. And you can now optimize the menus on the Launcher Bar to make it easier to add or delete content.
