When BB-8 goes to the dark side, we get an adorable menace

Playing out an evil twin trope, Disney and Sphero are giving us something to look forward to this Force Friday II: a new droid (or droids if we also count the new R2-D2 bot) that takes our beloved BB-8 from Star Wars: The Force Awakens and brings it to the dark side.

Called BB-9E—or if Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson had his way, BB-H8—is a new droid we’ll be seeing starting December 15th when The Last Jedi hits cinemas. As a toy, it’s being described as a “rolling menace” but for the film the BB-9E (we kinda wanted BB-H8 to stick) is a member of the Astromech unit of the First Order that’s in charge of keeping starships and machinery up and running.

BB-9E epitomizes the look of the dark side with its black and gray body, which is nearly identical to BB-8. But its head is more angular and it sports a red eye, making us think of Darth Vader.

BB-9E will retail for US$149.99 (around P7,600) but we’ll have to wait and see if Digital Walker will carry the adorable menace. We’ll keep you posted.

Tech Radar got to check out the augmented reality stuff linked with BB-9E and it gives us a look at a new Star Wars ship called The Supremacy. It’s a Mega-class Star Destroyer and said to be the main ship of Superme Leader Snoke and the First Order. When it comes to length, it measures at 60 kilometers. According to Tech Radar, it’s the only Mega-class Star Destroyer to be many times bigger than the Super Star Destroyer of the original trilogy. That isn’t unusual as we’ve seen Star Wars movies just keep super-sizing things (e.g. the Starkiller Base trumping the Death Star).
