IFA Roundup: Sony Xperia Z5 family

When Sony launched the Xperia Z3+ earlier this year, it was met with much disappointment as it was seen as only a slight improvement over last year’s Z3. People were expecting a much bigger release from Sony and it looks like Sony was listening and is making up for it with the launch of the Xperia Z5 Family of smartphones at this year’s IFA conference.

The first and most impressive of the new Xperia smartphones is the Z5 Premium which features the world’s first 4K, 3840 x 21560 pixel, smartphone display which, given its 5.5-inch size, gives it a tremendously high pixel density of 801ppi. It’s also equipped with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and a 3430mAh battery.

As for the regular Xperia Z5, it comes with a smaller 5.2-inch screen with a full HD display resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 2900mAh battery. And lastly, the Z5 Compact comes with the smallest screen of the three at 4.6 inches and a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and is equipped with only 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

All three of the new Xperia Z5 smartphones are powered by the new and improved version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core processor and are equipped with Sony’s new Exmor RS 23-megapixel camera sensors. All three also feature side-mounted fingerprint scanners which take the place of the old power button making it easier and faster to unlock them.

The bodies of the new Xperia Z5 smartphones are very similar to the previous Xperia Z models including the front and rear glass panels as well as the metal frame with engraved Xperia branding on the side. Sony did slightly change the new models’ design by adding a new frosted effect to the rear glass panels of the standard Z5 and Z5 Compact while the Z5 Premium got a mirror effect to its rear glass panel.
