The wheels are turning in the smartphone workhouse. Gone soon are the days of 16:9 resolution, bezels, and simply smartphones. In the near future, smartphone makers are turning to artificial intelligence to power their phone’s intelligence.

Hot off the heels of their push for camera technology dominance, Huawei now turns their sights to AI-driven smartphones with the launch of the Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro. Armed with Huawei’s specially engineered Kirin 970 processor chip, the new set of smartphones incorporates AI technology into its software.

The 10nm processor uses a neural processing unit for AI learning. The new AI can translate foreign languages offline and adapt automated app usage according to the user’s preferences, among many other features.

In conjunction with its Leica-engineered camera technology, the Mate 10’s camera software can automatically change shooting settings (contrast, exposure, aperture) according to the subjects and backgrounds that it detects on the screen.

Much like the latest smartphone offerings today, the Mate 10 uses an 18:9 edge-to-edge display that almost eliminates all hints of a bezel on the phone. The Mate 10 comes in 1440p display while the Mate 10 Pro curiously comes in just 1080p.

Besides the Kirin 970 chip, the Mate 10 onboards 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage (expandable through a microSD card). Meanwhile, the Mate 10 Plus has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage (without microSD expansion).

Out of the box, both the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro comes installed with the latest Android Oreo 8.0 with Huawei’s EMUI 8.0 custom ROM. The software supports split-screen apps, easy projection, and desktop UX.

Likewise, both units come with a stunning 4,000mAh of battery life. They boast of a two-day runtime from full to zero. Alternatively, they tout a charging time of an hour and a half from zero to full.

The Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro will be available starting November 15 internationally. It comes in four colors—Midnight Blue, Mocha Brown, Pink Gold, and Titanium Gray. The Mate 10 retails for $825 (approximately Php42,318). The Mate 10 Pro retails for $1,000 (approximately Php51,295).

There will also be an even more premium Mate 10 Porsche Design. Its specs will equal that of the Mate 10 Pro with the inclusion of a fingerprint sensor at the back. It retails for $1,646 (or approximately Php84,431).
