Huawei introduces new Mate 9

Huawei debuting the refresh to its Mate line comes at an opportune time. Of course, it would be ignorant to say this wasn’t timed with a certain South Korean tech company’s bad press. But instead of focusing on that, let’s turn our attention to the new Mate 9 devices. And we say devices because Huawei launched a smaller, limited edition model alongside the standard Mate phablet.

The “regular” Mate 9 sports a massive 5.9-inch Full HD display. It runs on Android 7.0 Nougat skinned with EMUI 5.0, Kirin 960 octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM, 64GB internal storage with expansion capabilities via microSD of up to 2TB. The Mate 9 also has a fingerprint reader, dual-band Wi-Fi connectivity, and 4,000mAh battery.

Just like the P9 and the P9 Plus, the Mate 9 comes with dual rear-facing Leica-branded cameras. This phone gets a bump up in terms of megapixels with a 20-megapixel monochrome sensor and a 12-megapixel RGB sensor with optical image stabilization. If you’re curious about the front camera, it has an 8-megapixel sensor.

Aside from this version of the Mate 9, Huawei partners with Porsche Design to unveil a limited edition model. This version is smaller with a 5.5-inch 2K AMOLED display, same processor and OS, 256GB internal storage, 6GB of RAM, same camera setup, and battery capacity. Both phones also have USB Type-C ports.

The Mate 9 is coming to Europe and China first for €699 (around P37,000), while the Porsche Design model goes for €1,395 (which is a hefty P75,000 or so). No word yet when it’s coming to the Philippines but we’re expecting for the phone to arrive here.
