How the Nissan LEAF is fighting the escalating air pollution

In the region of Asia and Oceania, approximately four billion people—92 percent of Asia and the Pacific’s population—are exposed to air pollution levels that pose a significant health risk. This was further highlighted with the February 2020 launch of the world’s largest real-time air quality data bank under the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), indicating that much of the region remains on ‘unhealthy’ air quality levels. In fact, air pollution is now globally the fifth leading cause of death among all heath risks and nine percent of deaths are attributed to it.

Many companies have been addressing this by committing to reduce their CO2 emissions by switching to more efficient processes. And consumers, more mindful of their own carbon footprint. We’ve been told over and over again but this number isn’t a joke. We need a 55% reduction in current CO2 emissions by 2030 to halt global warming. That needs everyone to work together to save this earth that we live in.

For its part, Nissan hopes to convince consumers to switch to more environmentally friendly modes of transportation such as their electric vehicle, the LEAF. To prove this, it has collected an analysis of the impact that the vehicle has had worldwide since its debut in 2010. At the same time, there is compelling data to demonstrate how electric mobility can be part of solutions to address air pollution levels:

1. Just one electric vehicle (EV) can save 4.6 metric tons of greenhouse gases each year, which is equivalent to planting 209 trees.

2. To date 460,000+ Global Nissan LEAF Owners have contributed to around 2.1 million metric tons of CO2 saved. To put that in context, more than 81 million trees are needed to process that much CO2 in a year. Over 13 billion emission-free kilometers driven by LEAF owners—the distance of driving to the moon more than 33,800 times.
