CES 2017: Lenovo previews its own VR headset

0

Virtual reality is a big thing at CES (as expected). So, it doesn’t surprise us that a prototype of a Lenovo-made headset shows up at the company’s showroom floor at The Venetian. It’s going to be a compelling product if it does what Lenovo promises it will do.

The unnamed prototype will be an affordable option at US$400 and it’ll be lighter and smaller than its direct competitors: the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift. It’ll weight just 350g and the bulk of that weight will rest on your forehead instead of on your nose, lessening the strain you’ll feel when you use it. Plus, Lenovo integrated a hinge design into it, letting you lift the headset portion and see what’s out there.

It comes with two 1,440 x 1,440 panels, which makes it even more high-res than the aforementioned VR headsets. Tracking technology on this headset is inside-out with six-degrees-of-freedom. This means you won’t need to setup an external camera to get it to work. With two front-facing cameras embedded on the headset, you get room-scale virtual reality experiences. This setup isn’t something their competition has done yet. Aside from that, this VR headset will work with Microsoft’s Windows Holographic system, expanding the use of the gadget further. So we’re excited to see what Lenovo plans to do with the VR headset when it officially comes out sometime in the year.
