Canon debuts first full-frame mirrorless camera, EOS R

In a case of better late than never, Canon launched its first full-frame mirrorless camera and lens system. The Canon EOS R comes with a 30.3-megapixel full-frame sensor, which has dual-pixel autofocus with 5,655 manually selectable AF points. It pairs this with its DIGIC 8 image processor and has a 100-40,000 ISO range. The camera can shoot stills up to 8fps and record 4K video at 30fps. It also comes equipped with both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. It can handle the elements a bit as its body is also dust- and weather-resistant.

One of the new things the Japanese camera maker introduces with this mirrorless camera is the way you control it. There is a new sliding left-right control bar on the back of the camera, which works for different features. The new lens system also now has dedicated control rings as well as dials for zooming and manual focus. The EOS R packs in a fully articulated touchscreen, OLED electronic viewfinder, as well as information panel on top of the camera.

The new EOS R lenses include the following: a 24-105mm f/4 L, a 50mm f/1.2mm L, a 28-70mm f/2 L, and a 35mm f/1.8 macro lens. Canon plans to launch three lens mount adapters for EOS SLR lenses, which include one with the EOS R control ring and another that can be used with drop-in filters.

If you’re thinking of getting it, the Canon EOS R’s body will retail for US$2,299 (a cool P123k) or $3,399 (approx. P182k) with the 24-105mm lens in late October. According to The Verge, preorders in the US start on September 12th.
