A Compass that points to exciting destinations

Jeep has introduced a new and exciting entry both in their own lineup, as well as in the compact SUV category. The new Jeep Compass, equipped with cutting-edge technology with features that keep both the driver and passengers in mind, is fuel-efficient, making it the perfect companion to meet all your driving needs. At P1,850,000 with an additional P365,000 discount and low down payment, Jeep’s latest product is just as enticing as it is exciting.

The Compass boasts a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine to allow excellent efficiency due to reduced friction and enhanced performance, ultimately producing 162ps and 250Nm of torque. For a Jeep unit and for a product of that type and price range, I was honestly expecting a larger engine. However, its overall performance overshadows any minor limitations or shortcomings. Moreover, the Compass also possesses a 7-speed automatic transmission.

Coming in three monotonous colorways, black, bright white and granite crystal, the Compass has a stout frame coated in high-strength steel for added protection, as passenger safety is one of its key focuses. In terms of its design, it combines a sleek, athletic look with that typical muscular Jeep look, which embodies the Compass’ capabilities on the busy city streets. Compared to fellow Jeep models, the Compass looks like the Cherokee’s little sibling.

The Compass has a simple yet sophisticated all-black interior that, from the steering wheel, seats, doors, handles and to the dashboard, are made from quality materials that give off a premium feel to it. I was surprised, however, that its ignition isn’t push-to-start, especially given how most, if not all, other aspects of the Compass have a classy vibe. Its dashboard is rather standard with a 7-inch Uconnect Touchscreen centered in the middle, with your typical buttons and knobs for air conditioning and volume control below it.

Another one of the Compass’ key focuses is its very spacious interior. Regardless of where you’re seated, there is ample leg, head and wiggle room. I felt quite comfortable at the driver’s seat even when seated for an extended period of time thanks to its roominess and overall comfort. So, if you ever find yourself caught in the taxing Manila traffic (which I’m sure you will, unfortunately), at least you would be in the comforting confinements of your Jeep Compass.

The trunk is likewise spacious, with added space from foldable second row seats for larger or unusually shaped cargo, if need be. There are two bulges on either side of the trunk due to the shape of the rear wheels that compromise a bit of space, but nothing too concerning. Personally, I was able to fit my entire golf bag in the trunk, albeit barely fittingly. Whether going on grocery runs, playing a round of golf, heading to the gym, going on out of town trips or just carrying large loads, the Compass has sufficient trunk space for all those needs.

The Compass features a 7-inch Uconnect Touchscreen and is in fact the first Jeep vehicle with the new 4th generation Uconnect system. Its in-vehicle infotainment includes typical features such as radio, music and answering calls, among others. For Apple and Android users, the Uconnect system has integrated Apple CarPlay and Baidu Carlife as well. I found the 7-inch screen to be a bit small when trying to read and navigate through it, but aside from that, it possesses all the necessities that an in-vehicle infotainment should have.

I was more impressed by the versatility of its 7-inch Multiview Driver Information Digital Cluster Display that has multiple features and modes. You can choose to have the speedometer, see the fuel economy, inspect trip details and can even impressively show you the car’s tire pressure. Aside from these, it can also show you music details of what is currently being played or scroll through messages on your phone. Lastly, you can also set certain safety features to your liking such as auto door lock, auto handbrake and many more.

As previously mentioned, driver and passenger safety are one of the aspects at the forefront of the Compass. With over 70 active and passive safety and security features and seven standard airbags, the Compass gives you peace of mind knowing that the vehicle you’re in possesses a generous suite of safety features.

The Compass also has a rearview camera with dynamic gridlines for an extra set of eyes when reversing. What I appreciated most about it was that even when putting it on Drive after being on Reverse, the rearview camera remains on-screen until you’ve parked.

Overall, the Compass was a great drive. Both the gas and brakes were extremely responsive, which is always a good sign, but did take a while to get accustomed to its sensitivity. After getting used to its responsiveness, the drive became that much more enjoyable. The repeated shift from gas to brake and vice versa was not jarring at all, which I’m sure any Manila-based driver would greatly appreciate.

Even for a 1.4-liter engine, the car felt powerful and quick, even despite having full passengers and/or cargo as well. I found the Compass to be a bit low off the ground, hence the extra caution needed when approaching speed bumps or when going uphill. The car has a wide body and thus has a wide feel to it as well, but its mobility was excellent, nonetheless.

The Compass is premium all-around, from its performance, features, feel and to its appearance. I would say that it outperforms its P1,850,000 price tag (which actually becomes a very sweet P1,485,000, net of discount). Whether traveling through the busy Manila streets or getting away to your favorite vacation spot, not only would the Compass take you there, but it would do it safely, efficiently, comfortably and enjoyably.
