Of the myriad definitions of the word “legacy,” the one that truly resonates is this:

Legacy is the lasting impact you leave on the world. It is the way you shape the lives of others, the values you share, and the memories you leave behind.”

Nowhere has those words been better embodied than at the Toyota Legacy Experience held earlier this month. The event brought together enthusiasts, car clubs, families, off-road fans and the general public to celebrate where Toyota has been, experience where it is today, and get a glimpse of where it is headed next.

At the center of the experience were three new landmark additions to Toyota’s legendary lineup: the all-new Land Cruiser FJ, new Land Cruiser HEV, and all-new Hilux, in both diesel and battery-electric versions.

But the Legacy Experience was about more than simply putting new vehicles on display. It was about understanding the stories behind the nameplates—and the people who have made them part of their own stories.

Experiencing the next generation of Land Cruisers

For enthusiasts, one of the biggest attractions of the event was the opportunity to get up close to Toyota’s newest models. The all-new Land Cruiser FJ represents a significant expansion of the Land Cruiser family. While the name carries the weight of decades of off-road heritage, the Land Cruiser FJ is designed to bring that capability into everyday life.

Built for the everyday drive as well as off-road expeditions, the Land Cruiser FJ combines the rugged character expected of a Land Cruiser with immense potential for personalization and customization. It is a vehicle that can serve as a daily companion during the week and a platform for adventure when the road—or trail—ends.

That made it particularly relevant to the overlanding and off-road communities present at the Toyota Legacy Experience. And visitors did not have to simply look at it. The event gave guests the opportunity to experience the Land Cruiser FJ through off- and on-road test drives, allowing them to get a better appreciation of how Toyota’s newest adventure-oriented nameplate translates its heritage into a vehicle intended for modern drivers.

Alongside it was another significant development in the Land Cruiser story: the new Land Cruiser HEV. For generations, the Land Cruiser name has been associated with power, durability and the ability to take on demanding terrain. Now, that legendary character takes another step forward with electrification.

The Land Cruiser HEV brings together the established capabilities of the Land Cruiser nameplate with hybrid technology, delivering what Toyota describes as “legendary power – electrified for the modern roads.” It represents another chapter in a legacy that continues to evolve without abandoning the qualities that made the nameplate famous in the first place.

Hilux gets tougher—and electric

The other major attraction was the all-new Hilux, displayed in both internal combustion and battery-electric forms. The Hilux has long been a familiar sight wherever capability and durability are required. The latest model builds on that proven foundation with improvements throughout the vehicle, while retaining the off-road capability and on-road drivability that have defined the nameplate.

Visually, the new Hilux takes on a more futuristic interpretation of toughness through Toyota’s “Cyber Sumo” design aesthetic. The result combines the muscular stance traditionally associated with the Hilux with sharper, more sophisticated styling, giving the pickup a distinctly modern identity.

But perhaps the biggest development is happening beneath the skin. With the introduction of the Hilux BEV, the iconic pickup enters the electric pickup segment, wherein a familiar Toyota nameplate is adapting for specialized fleet usage — providing an interesting glimpse at how Toyota legacy nameplates can continue into an electrified future.

Where legacy meets community

Yet for all the attention given to the new models, the Toyota Legacy Experience was never intended to be just another vehicle launch.

The word “Experience” was important.

Visitors could walk through displays of classic and vintage Land Cruiser and Hilux models and see how the nameplates have evolved over generations. These heritage vehicles provided a tangible connection between Toyota’s past and the new models being introduced.

A modern Land Cruiser FJ or Hilux may feature technologies and design philosophies that could not have been imagined decades ago. But parked alongside their predecessors, they also make something clear: the names may evolve, but the spirit behind them continues.

That connection was especially evident among the Toyota owners and car clubs who attended the event.

The Toyota Legacy Experience became a gathering place for people who have made Toyota vehicles part of their lives, whether through daily driving, family trips, weekend adventures, motorsports, overlanding or simply a shared appreciation for automobiles.

Eventgoers were even encouraged to bring their own Toyotas, turning the venue into a celebration of the cars and their owners.

From heritage to personal stories

This sense of community also highlights how owners have chosen Toyota through the years. At its heart, Toyota Choice, with its vast array of options for different needs and lifestyles, endows people with the power to choose what’s right for them. At the same time, it speaks to those still considering their options and invites them to discover what it means to be empowered by the Toyota Choice.

That is perhaps the most powerful form of brand loyalty: not something dictated by advertising or pricing, but something demonstrated by people who continue to choose the same brand because it has earned a place in their lives.

A legacy that keeps moving

The Toyota Legacy Experience ultimately brought together three different dimensions of the brand. There was heritage, represented by the older Land Cruiser and Hilux models that showed where these iconic nameplates came from. There was community, represented by Toyota owners, car clubs, enthusiasts and families who gathered to celebrate their shared passion. And there was the future, represented by the all-new Land Cruiser FJ, the electrified Land Cruiser HEV, and the all-new Hilux in both ICE and BEV forms.

For off-road and overlanding enthusiasts, the event offered the chance to see and experience vehicles designed to continue the adventure. For Toyota owners, it was an opportunity to proudly display their vehicles and share their passion with fellow enthusiasts. And for those simply curious about what Toyota is bringing next, it offered a glimpse of how familiar names are adapting to a changing automotive world.

And for everyone who attended, the message was simple: Legacy isn’t just something to remember — it’s something to experience.
