Android updates might be slow in reaching consumers but Google makes up for it by improving the experience for those who are using their services. From password checking to messaging, Google has implemented new features for Android users focused on making things safer and easier.
Password Checkup
If you use Google’s Autofill feature for your app passwords, they’re now checking it in their list of known compromised credentials of known data breaches. This way if your password is included, you’ll be advised to change it immediately, preventing worse things from happening with your information. This is available to users with Android 9 and newer.
Scheduled Messages
Users running Android 7 and newer can now write texts in the Messages app and send it at a later time or date. All you have to do is update the app to the latest version, type your text normally, and hold down on the send icon until the option pops up.
Talkback – for the visually impaired
For those who are blind or having difficulty seeing the display, Google has revamped their Talkback app and incorporated feedback from the community. There’s now more intuitive gestures, a unified menu, new reading control menu, and more. They can now use their phone more effectively without looking at the screen.
Improved Google Assistant
You can now use Google Assistant even if your phone is locked, but also with more general commands only. Just go to settings and turn on Lock Screen Personal Results in Assistant Settings and say “Hey Google”. You can now send messages, make calls, set an alarm, even play Spotify without having to reach your phone and unlock them.
Maps in the dark
Dark mode is now available in Google Maps even if you’re not hooked into Android Auto and it’s not night time. Just click on your profile in the app, click on settings, go to theme, and choose Always in dark theme. There’s still the ‘Always in light theme’ should you want the bright mode again.
Android Auto improvements
Beyond maps and Spotify, Google has implemented new features for their car app. You can now have custom wallpapers, play a game with your passengers, and they put shortcuts on the home screen. It can also now take advantage of cars with wider screens by having a split-screen view where it shows the app on one side, and the media controls on the other.
These Android Auto improvements will be available for those running Android 6 and newer, and for compatible car and head units.
