Samsung goes up to 575 megabytes per second

Have you ever dreamed of downloading a movie at 575 megabytes per second? That’s roughly a 1080p full HD movie every three minutes! You can have the whole ten seasons of Friends in under an hour. This is the dream that Samsung Electronics has realized with the development of 60Ghz Wi-Fi technology, which translates into a five-fold increase of the maximum speed possible with existing consumer devices.

Here’s the layman of this new technology: What we have commercially are 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi technologies. These fail to realize their maximum potential because of interference to the signal. They experience data loss upon transmission. That’s why Internet speeds rarely ever reach the top speed that’s being advertised. The new 60GHz tech eliminates this interference. This baby goes up to 575MB/second speeds. To put that into context, current technology only goes up to 108MB/second.

But what does this mean for us? Little, in fact. For now. And if you’re limiting yourself to torrent downloads. Samsung will be applying this to “audio visual and medical devices, as well as telecommunications equipment” by next year. Besides these devices, this is another step towards the impending Internet of Things. Don’t expect lightning-speed downloads overnight. Adapting Samsung devices to this technology will be the priority. Internet connections are not this fast yet. Especially here. We can’t even accelerate to more than a couple of megabytes, much less five hundred.

What can we expect? More developments, definitely. It’s not perfect yet. A wider gap between us and them. Watch as the world leaves our slow Internet trailing in the dust and our telcos playing a desperate game of catch-up. More brands adapting. This is just Samsung we’re talking about. Wait until Apple, Microsoft, and the head honchos of tech get their hands on this. Expect new technology to come crawling out of the woodwork. More importantly, expect the Internet of Things very soon.
