It’s been a big question mark ever since Microsoft acquired Nokia in one of this year’s most surprising acquisitions. Speculation ran rampant that Nokia would fade into obscurity from a major rebranding effort. Now, we have answers on the fate of Nokia.
From Nokia’s Conversations blog, Microsoft has issued a statement that includes the announcement of a new phone and the fate of old Nokia models.
Hello, Microsoft Lumia! Microsoft is looking to unveil the new Microsoft Lumia device in the near future. There is no official announcement as to when this might be, but when it does, we can expect all of the features that will make this a true Microsoft device, like Office and OneDrive. When asked about what the new Lumia stands for, Microsoft stands committed to introducing innovations to the new devices.
How about Nokia phones? They’re still out in the market. “Microsoft will continue to sell Nokia-branded, entry-level category of phones, such as the Nokia 130. [Microsoft has] licensed the Nokia brand for such devices,” as stated in the blog. In other words, it looks like the new Microsoft Lumia devices will be the company’s top-tier models and Nokia will be relegated to the basic packages.
