We tried Huawei’s new MeeTime, here’s how it went

If you haven’t heard, Huawei has recently debuted its very own video conferencing platform, MeeTime alongside its announcement of its new EMUI 10.1 and the launch of the P40 series. MeeTime is the brand’s answer to Apple’s FaceTime and supports up to 1080p Full HD video calls between Huawei devices. With features like screen sharing and even beauty settings (which leverages on Huawei’s AI cameras), it’s a great video and voice calling option to use to catch up with friends and family—especially in this quarantine period.

Those using the P40 series and the MatePad Pro (on the latest update) can already use MeeTime. You can find it in the Phone app and it automatically adds contacts who have enabled MeeTime on their devices. Now that a large part of the world is under community quarantine because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, online communication and collaboration is the next best thing to meeting and seeing friends, family, and colleagues during these times.

I called my sister on the P40 (in another room, because quarantine), who used the MatePad Pro for our little test chat. While our home WiFi was particularly bad today, we still managed to see and hear each other quite clearly thanks its super resolution technology. Huawei also packed the app with several nifty AI features like one that detects users calling in low-light and automatically adjusts the image for the other person to see better.

But probably my favorite feature on MeeTime is the two-way screen sharing feature—perfect for collaboration, or you know, online shopping with your girlfriends. It almost feels like sitting next to the other person, in a way. There’s also pen mode where you can draw on the screen to help you better illustrate what you want to say to the other person.

It also supports third-party devices like action cameras or webcams so you can share the action. It doesn’t support multi-person conferencing as of the moment (but we hope it will in the future!)

MeeTime is currently available on devices running on the latest EMUI 10.1, particularly the new P40 series and the MatePad Pro. Older Huawei devices such as the previous P-series and the Mate series can also try it out with later updates coming out soon.
