Volkswagen CEO Ralf Brandstaetter said they have no plans to further make new combustion engines as they gear up to meet their targets for electric cars by 2030.
Speaking to Automobilwoche, Brandstaetter said that the existing engines will still be developed to meet Euro 7 standards but new engine families are definitely out of the equation.
“We still need them for a certain time, and they have to be as efficient as possible” Brandstaetter said. He adds that the profits from cars with combustion vehicles will be used to fund their push for electric.
Their cars with internal combustion engines like the Golf and Passat will have new generation models but will be fitted with hybrid technology and a range of up to 100km. They’ll be developed in parallel with the brand’s push for a diverse all-electric lineup.
Volkswagen aims to have their all-electric cars take up 70 percent market share in Europe and 50 percent in the US and China, all by 2030. They plan on doing this by releasing a new electric car per year in the least.
