First teased with the Apex concept at the Mobile World Congress a few months ago, the Vivo NEX is the company’s latest innovation, which features some never-before-seen tech a.k.a. that retractable front camera.
The new phone, which was recently launched in China, comes with a 6.59-inch Full HD+ 19.3:9 Super AMOLED display that offers a 91.2 percent screen-to-body ratio. In terms of bezels, the top bezel is just 2.16mm thick, with the bottom bezel coming in at 5.08mm, and the side bezels at 1.71mm. The NEX also features a third-generation in-display fingerprint sensor that is said to be 50 percent better at recognition accuracy with a broader detection area and 10 percent faster unlock speed.
Additionally, the design of the glass back is described as a “Holographic Diffraction Dynamic Color” illusion technology, which is able to view thousands of “diffraction units” laser engraved onto the back of the device to create a “dreamlike sci-fi effect.”
One of the phone’s key features is the aforementioned retractable 8-megapixel front camera that is hidden away in everyday use and only pops up during activation of the front camera. Vivo says that this technology is owed to the micro-drive system with the independent drive ICs allow the camera to elevate with “absolute precision.”
The motor can push up to 500g, withstand a thrust force of 45kg, and can be raised and lowered over 50,000 times. This means that the camera won’t easily be broken should the phone be dropped while it’s activated.
The NEX is also equipped with artificial intelligence technology, with the phone offering AI-assisted scene recognition, HDR, filters, and photo composition. You get a dual rear camera setup here with a 12-megapixel main shooter with f/1.8 aperture combined with a 5-megapixel sensor with f/2.4 aperture as well as four-axis optical image stabilization.
There are two variants of the Vivo NEX—the NEX S and NEX A. The NEX S gets the best specs with the under-display fingerprint sensor, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB internal storage. Meanwhile, the NEX A gets a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB internal storage. Its fingerprint scanner is relegated to the back of the device instead of under the display. Both get a sizeable 4,000mAh battery.
Vivo NEX is only available in China for now retailing for CNY3,898 (roughly around P31,000) for the 6GB/128GB NEX A, CNY4,498 (roughly around P35,800) for the 8GB/128GB NEX S combo, and CNY4,998 (roughly around P39,800) for the higher-spec’d 8GB/256GB NEX S model. No news yet on its global release.
