Toyota is not letting the pandemic hold them back as they keep launching one car after another. Just a month after introducing the updated Hilux, they just announced the arrival of the new Fortuner. It has a new variant, updated interiors, tech amenities, and a revised engine with better efficiency.
Fortuner LTD
Toyota went all out with their new top-tier variant, putting all the premium touches on it and making it more attractive to non-off roading fans by offering a 4×2 trim, for those who want the new amenities without the 4×4 tax.
It’s more upmarket in looks thanks to its lack of chrome, two-tone color, sporty front and rear bumpers, split-type LED headlights, and machine-cut 18-inch alloy wheels. The turn signals are also sequential meaning they go from one direction to the other, which was trickled down from more expensive models in the Toyota family.
Inside, it’s all plush leather with maroon accents. Both front seats are 8-way power adjustable and ventilated, while the middle seats are still 60:40 and the rear seats are still hanging from the sides and not folded down. There’s ‘galaxy black’ panels and LED illumination in some key areas, 8-inch display audio with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (which are available for the whole lineup), and the LTD exclusive 9-speaker JBL sound system. Sweet.
Casual Fortuners
Those who want a sleeker but more affordable Fortuner would not be disappointed in the non-LTD variants. They retain the same demeanor of the former model with updates in front that decreased the amount of chrome, blacked-out the grille and fog light housing, and now has a bi-beam headlight.
The Q and V trims have Smart Entry and Push Start system like the LTD but only the Q has leather upholstery inside, with both V and G having fabric. The Q also gets the 8-way power adjustable front seats but this time, no ventilation, while the V and G have manual adjust seats. A wireless charger and rear usb chargers are also available for the Q and V trims.
Updated Engines
Under the hood of the top-spec LTD Fortuner and the Q variant is the 1GD-FTV engine which is a 2.8L diesel with 201 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque while the V and G trims have the same 2.4L 2GD-FTV with 148 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. Toyota promises though that the 2.4L engine is 5% more fuel efficient than the previous version.
Only the LTD-spec gets 4×4 capability, and all have 6-speed automatic transmission save for the G which can be coupled to a 6-speed manual.
Toyota’s slew of advanced safety features called ‘Toyota Safety Sense’ is only available for the LTD and Q trims that includes Pre-Collision system, Lane Departure Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, front, side, and curtain airbags, Panoramic View Monitor, and downhill assist control.
Across the line, the new Fortuner has an anti-lock brake system with brake assist, vehicle stability control, traction control, hill-start assist, and sensors for both front and rear.
