Huawei has recently launched their latest generation wireless FreeBuds 4i. These earbuds are surprisingly cheaper than its predecessor, the FreeBuds 3i released last year. Keep reading to know if this price decrease has a positive or negative effect on the features the earbuds have to offer.
Inside the box
The FreeBuds 4i come with an oval-shaped and compact charging case that features a smooth texture and a flattened back allowing it to sit easily on a flat surface. The earbuds adopt an edgeless design for a more pleasing and comfortable experience. It’s also complemented by two other sizes for its ear tips to ensure a snug fit. It also comes with a Type-C to USB cable, safety information, warranty card, and a user guide.
Design
The design of the FreeBuds 4i was inspired by the Reynisfjara black sand beaches of Iceland. It comes in your classic Carbon Black and Ceramic White that never goes out of style. Apart from these two colorways however, Huawei offers a new vibrant and bold color in Red.
The FreeBuds 4i has built-in capacitive touch sensors on both sides of the earbuds to accurately determine the user’s habits and further improve their degree of sensitivity. Compared with the traditional tapping method, users can complete operations such as music control, voice calling, and switching noise cancellation on and off with a light tap, meaning they can enjoy a more convenient interactive experience. Additionally, the earbuds’ surface is finished with a high-gloss coating to repel dirt and scuff marks. Together with the anti-mistouch algorithm, these features will help users avoid making false touches.
- Tap twice:

- Voice call: Answer / end call
- Long press:

Sound quality
Sound quality is an abstract concept, but it can be tangibly affected by a device’s physical components. Inside the FreeBuds 4i is a 10mm large dynamic driver that enables a wider range of amplitudes for stronger bass sounds. The separate rear chamber design also ensures consistency in sound effects and comfortable listening for the user. In addition to a high-quality dynamic driver and diaphragm, professional tuning is possible to reproduce fantastic sounds for users.
Features
Battery
The Huawei FreeBuds 4i inherits the premium battery life of the FreeBuds family. It sports a large battery with a high energy density within its compact body. According to data from the Huawei laboratory, when ANC is turned off, the earbuds can offer 10 hours of continuous music playback or 6.5 hours of voice call on a full charge. Together with the charging case, it can achieve up to 22 hours of music playback or 14 hours of voice calls.
Active Noise Cancellation
Huawei has optimized noise cancellation for the most common user scenarios and locations in everyday life, such as shopping centers, buses, train stations and offices. Further calibrations were made to address typical noises, including
air conditioning humming sounds, computer fan noise, train noise in tunnels and bustling crowds. To achieve active noise cancellation, HUAWEI FreeBuds 4i uses microphones to detect ambient noise and adopts active noise cancellation algorithms to create inverted acoustic waves to cancel it out. Sound quality is not compromised when delivering comfortable active noise cancellation and it can even help to reduce pressure in the listeners’ ears.
Awareness Mode
With a long pinch on the earbud handle, users can easily switch from Noise Cancellation mode to Awareness mode without physically taking out the earbuds. This allows users to be aware of ambient sounds as well as communicate with people around them more easily.
Dual-microphone noise cancellation for clearer calls
To minimize the interference of ambient noise during calls, the FreeBuds 4i uses multiple technologies including the emission of an “inverted sound wave”, supported by two external microphones for accurate sound pickup. It also includes a unique anti-wind design that can effectively improve wind noise cancellation.
Connection
The earbuds support proximity Bluetooth pairing. When the earphone is pairing with a new Huawei device, a pop-up window will be automatically displayed on the device’s screen and the user can click to complete the pairing seamlessly and easily.
