Volvo’s new plug-in hybrid, the S90, is a true premium sedan that makes a strong statement with its safety features, advanced technology and unmatched luxury. The S90 combines an impressive 400 horsepower with generous fuel economy, powered by intelligent all-wheel drive technology and the renowned T8 Twin Engine powerplant that can go emission-free for up to 34 kilometers.
High fuel economy and luxury go hand in hand with superb performance. The S90 lets the driver go from zero to 100 km/h in a mere 4.8 seconds. It can feel like having four cars in one by letting the driver choose between four driving modes: AWD (all-wheel drive), Pure (Eco drive), Hybrid (everyday use), and Power (sporty driving).
The Volvo S90’s modern Swedish interior includes a diamond-patterned starter button, luxury Orrefors crystal and Linear Walnut trim. The Standard Comfort seats in the front give the passenger unparalleled support, with an optional powered adjustment (featuring side bolsters and extending seat cushions).
The aluminum double wishbone suspension helps to ensure a quick steering response. In the rear seats of which there are three, integral link suspension and optional rear air suspension makes sure weight is at a minimum to guarantee a smooth ride. The S90 rolls on 20-inch alloy wheels and high-performance tires with 21-inch wheels as an option.
The backseats are also given the same luxury as the front, with optional heating and extensive legroom due to the front seats’ sleek profile. An underrated interior feature, especially for city driving, is the S90’s CleanZone multifilter technology. This filter minimizes dust and pollen keeping the air within the car clean and pure, no matter the conditions outside. As a final touch, customizable casings allow drivers to match their interior with their key fob, such as in classic leather, Linear Walnut or Flame Birch.
The Volvo S90 delivers beautiful acoustics throughout its interior cabin, which has been customized to the car’s specifications by Bowers and Wilkins. There are 19 speakers in total, including a distinctive subwoofer made partially from carbon fiber that gathers air from outside the vehicle to create a dynamic sound with rich texture and bass. A dash-mounted tweeter that faces inward also minimizes acoustic reflections. There are three custom ‘room modes’ that allow you to configure the sound depending on the type of music or mood. Distinctive Bowers & Wilkins yellow speaker cones and stainless steel speaker grilles match the elegant sound from the speakers.
The Volvo S90’s technological features primarily run through its impressive 9-inch central touchscreen. This screen is so receptive to touch that one can even operate it while wearing gloves. In addition to this screen, the digital driver display located behind the steering wheel gives the driver important information directly in front of them. This display automatically adjusts its brightness depending on the surrounding lighting, and the voice control function even reacts to natural speech instead of scripted prompts to control climate, navigation, phone and media.
Using the Volvo On Call app allows you to pre-heat or pre-cool your S90, lock or unlock remotely, and find your car in a crowded lot. You can even sync your calendar with the On Call app to give you an extra reminder for your appointments, where they are or how to get to them. The Volvo S90 provides Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support. This mobile support allows the driver to use the phone’s functions via the car’s touch screen, steering wheel controls and voice control. Through these controls the driver can make calls, listen to music, use navigation apps and access messages. The touchscreen specially designates these mobile features to the bottom half the screen, with the upper half containing the car’s main functions.
Intelligent Driver Assist features of the Volvo S90 include the Park Assist Pilot that utilizes a 360° camera to let you know if a potential parking space is large enough and will automatically steer the car into place if possible.
Pilot Assist helps the S90 maintain a steady speed and distance to a car ahead of you (up to speeds of 130km/h), while also providing steer support to help maintain the car within its lane. The Curve Speed Adaptation function utilizes live map data to read bends on the road and adjust speed and steering accordingly. The Cross Traffic Alert radar technology allows the driver to see around corners, which is especially helpful when reversing out of a parking space. Run-Off Road Mitigation keeps you safe by detecting if you are about to veer off the road and uses automatic steering and braking to keep you on the road. Lastly, City Safety comes standard with the S90 and provides an extra pair of eyes by braking automatically to help avoid or minimize a potential collision with other vehicles, cyclists, large animals or pedestrians.
