In an event earlier today, Apple has announced the 3rd generation of the AirPods. It gets a much needed update involving a new design, better battery life, and new features to make it competitive again and not just an ecosystem requirement.
The design now resembles that of the AirPods Pro, even in the charging case. It now has a shorter stem that also features force sensors for controls, but lacks the silicon tip, making it distinct from the higher model. It’s also IPX4 rated for resistance to sweat and water including the charging case.
Taking advantage of the latest innovations from Apple, the new AirPods now uses computational audio. This means a number of higher end features made its way to the new standard of Apple’s wireless earbuds. Adaptive EQ modifies the audio EQ depending on the fit of the AirPods to your ears. Spatial audio simulates the experience from that of a surround sound system while dynamic head tracking modifies sound ‘placement’ depending on where you turn your head.
The new AirPods now have a skin-detect sensor so it can pause when it identifies that it’s not in your ear anymore, while an improved mic is utilized for better clarity during calls.
There’s now an extra hour of battery life for the new AirPods, capable of 6 hours of listening time or 4 hours of talk time. A five minute charge will yield an hour of battery life which can be extended with the case. It’s now MagSafe capable and can provide four additional charges for a total of 30 hours listening time. The MagSafe capability is also added to the current AirPods Pro without any bump in price.
The 3rd generation AirPods will be available soon in the PH Apple Store with a price of P10,990. The older AirPods will still be available for purchase at a lower price of P7,690.
