Now you can catch the second season of Supergirl on the same day as the US telecast only on HOOQ. Leaving the four walls of Cat Grant’s office, Kara Danvers tries to figure out what she really wants to do with her life. While as Supergirl, she continues to work at the DEO, protecting the citizens of National City. Join Kara as she reunites with family this season, and discovers who is in the crashed pod that left viewers hanging at the end of Season 1. Here are a couple of takeaways from the San Diego Comic Con interview of Melissa Benoist, who plays Kara in the show.
What excites you the most about Season Two of Supergirl?
I’m excited about everything. I love this character and I just want her to keep growing. I love it when she is happy and I love when she overcomes obstacles. There’s not one thing I’m particularly excited about; I’m excited about all of it.
How does Season Two compare to Season One?
I think that Season One was like her “coming out” party. It was about her figuring out where she fit in the world—but now it’s time to mature and come into her own as a woman, as a hero, in her career and in her love life. It’s also about her coming into her own as a superhero; learning how to juggle it all and to find balance.
How will having a new job and new responsibilities impact Kara’s role as Supergirl?
What I love about the show is the fact that there’s a constant ebb and flow; a constant movement of the scales in Kara’s life. When she feels secure and extremely confident in the Supergirl side of her life, she doesn’t feel so great about her career or her relationship with Miss Grant [played by Calista Flockhart]. It’s a constant symbiotic relationship that she’s always exploring.
How important is it for you to play a strong female character?
I think it’s essential right now, and not just because she’s a woman, but because she stands for so much good. I think we need that in the world right now. It’s a really scary place, for both boys and girls, so I hope she inspires bravery and courage and the will to never give up.
When you first won this role, what was your initial impression of Kara as a character?
I think I immediately thought of her as a dork. That’s how I played her from my very first audition. I thought she was someone who hadn’t quite figured out who she was. She was awkward in her skin and she didn’t really know how to be herself fully. I think my first reaction was, “This girl is a dweeb. I love her!”
