Sony promised to change the way you look at photos last February 24 when the Philippines saw the launch of Sony’s #PicturesInFull campaign displaying the full-frame advantage in capturing super images. The event, which was held at the Shooting Gallery Studios in Makati, was where Sony introduced its latest full-frame camera, the Sony a7R III.
The event was filled with people from the media, students, hobbyists, and pro-photographers alike. Respected photographers from the field treated the audience to a series of photography workshops. Paco Guerrero gave a lesson on lighting your subject and showcasing the dynamic range of the a7R III. Charisma Lico, whose expertise is shooting with neon lights to illuminate her subject, gave a quick rundown on how the a7R III captures the colors perfectly and vividly.
Nigel Laxamana demonstrated the a7R III’s ability to transfer images instantly from the camera to your workstation via USB-C even if shooting in burst mode. Lastly, Pilar Trigo Bonnin focused on the a7R III’s 10fps speed to capture motion while delivering superb auto-focus tracking that makes sure each frame you capture is in focus without missing any of the action.
Sony’s a7R III packs a 42.4-megapixel 35mm full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor and enhanced processing system. Sony listened to users of the a7R II as the a7R III now packs a much-improved battery life almost doubling the shots you can take from the previous version. The a7R III is pretty much the Sony a9’s baby brother. The slightly bigger body gives the user a better grip ensuring better stability for shooting handheld. The viewfinder is pleasing to look at with its 1,280 x 960 resolution. Everything looks crisp and detailed. The touchscreen makes it even easier fpr new users switching from smartphones as you can just tap on the part of the image that you want to focus.
The other addition to the a7R III is the joystick button—an inheritance from the a9. This joystick greatly improves the usability of the camera going through menus or specifying an AF point. The right side of the camera features a door that opens to two SD card slots. Unfortunately, only Slot 1 is compatible with UHS-II cards, and Slot 2 only supports UHS-I standard cards. On the opposite side is a plethora of ports that features the fast USB-C port, a flash sync socket, headphone output and mic input, HDMI port and a standard USB 2.0 port.
The a7R III features an entirely renewed image processing system with the following features:
- Silent Shooting Mode allows the user to shoot without camera shake.
- The 42.4-megapixel sensor features a Fast Hybrid AF with 399-point Focal-Plane Phase-detection AF that tracks the subject’s eye with ultimate precision even in low-light conditions.
- High-speed continuing shooting of up to 10fps paired with a high-speed and accurate AF system.
- Shoot in low-light like no other. The ISO range of 100-32,000 (ext 102,400) delivers a wide dynamic range and spectacular detail. The 5-axis In-Body Image Stabilization provides a stop or two advantage when shooting handheld, ensuring a sharp and focused image.
