Globe Telecom and Samsung Electronics team up to challenge the creativity and skills of Filipino developers in coming out with innovative Android apps that can demonstrate Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities.
The Internet of Things is the next final frontier in the realm of technology. The phenomenon envisions a technological ecosystem wherein every object (gadget, furniture, or appliance) is connected through a single system controllable with a single device, like a smartphone. It’s no wonder that the technology leaders of today are in the race for the next big thing.
Thus, for the second year of the Singtel-Samsung Regional App Challenge, focus will be on the IoT and how it can improve healthcare and general lifestyle. The competition aims to identify innovative startups in the region, help them accelerate their app development, and connect them with operators within the Singtel Group. Last year’s competition aimed at developing apps geared towards fitness and the wearable market.
Two teams will be chosen to represent the Philippines in the final competition in Jakarta, Indonesia where they will battle against winners from other countries to vie for the Best App. Aside from the all-expense paid trip, they will also be invited to attend a mentorship program in Singapore. Each winning team will receive USD 1,000.
Meanwhile, the winner of the regional challenge will receive a cash prize of $10,000, marketing support from the Singtel Group of operators for their winning idea, the opportunity to access the Group’s mobile customer base of over 550 million across 25 countries, and prime product placement on Samsung content and services platforms.
Local developers are given until August 12 to submit their ideas. The apps should be 80 to 90% finished, but have not launched commercially yet. They will be judged based on concept (30%); innovation and uniqueness (40%); essential value and utility (15%); and, key features (15%).
Those who will make it to the top 10 will be called for final pitching on October 10. Criteria for judging are as follows: general appeal (30%); innovation and uniqueness (30%); essential value and utility (30%); completeness (10%); and, presentation (15%).
