Renowned Malaysian photographer and Samsung ambassador Patrick Low was in town recently to help professional photographers get the most out of their portfolios and develop their skills.
Low, the founder of artistic wedding photography studio Exes Studio, conducted a portfolio review and photography workshop for Digital Photographer Philippines Magazine‘s photography festival held at SM Aura Premiere on October 3 and 4.
Samsung Philippines invited us to sit down with Low during his visit to talk about photography as a full-time profession and what it takes to succeed in the business.
He shared some tips that would prove valuable to those thinking of making the jump from an amateur to a pro photographer—as well as any professional looking to succeed in their chosen careers.
- Stop going for the shortcut or for what’s convenient. You must learn the basics of photography. It isn’t enough to rely on Photoshop to make your photos better.
- Surround yourself with the right people. You won’t find yourself lacking in inspiration if you are with good people. Find people that can help you grow instead of pull you down. Learn from them and let them learn from you.
- Learn how to present yourself. Low believes it isn’t just about being able to take good shots but also being able to talk to people and sharing the ideas behind your images. Learning how to be a good communicator is essential for your job.
- Walk the talk. Don’t boast about your achievements to your clients. Rather, tell them how you can help them out–what need of theirs can you meet and how you can help them.
- Work on your 70 percent. For Low, photography only takes up 30 percent of being a professional photographer. The other 70 percent is concentrated on the business side. You need to have someone who can manage the business for you. Have a business plan and think of it as a full-time job. You need a strategy to build on.
