OPPO recently launched their midrange Reno5 smartphone that comes with 5G connectivity and a slew of impressive features particularly for content creators. As a brand famously known for its phone cameras, let’s see how this one performs.
Display and build
When first opening the Reno5’s box, you are greeted with a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen sat on top of a super-sleek 7.8mm body. This High Sensitivity Display has a screen-to-body ratio of 91.7%, is capable of a 90Hz refresh rate, and has a FHD+ (2400×1080) resolution. Weighing in at just 171g, the phone comes in either a classic Starry Black or the brand-new Galactic Silver color, which is the model we have on hand. Depending on the lighting, the phone can vary in appearance across the color spectrum on both versions. Additionally, the Reno Glow effect highlights the Reno5’s matte finish which ensures it remains fingerprint resistant.
Performance
The Reno5 5G runs on ColorOS 11.1 which maintains the well-beloved stock Android11 features while also providing rich UI customization. It’s powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G paired with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
64MP Camera
The OPPO Reno5 5G sports a 64MP camera, and the phone can even record through its front (32MP) and rear cameras simultaneously. The front camera is enhanced by the phone’s built-in Ultra Night Selfie Mode, which allows for Night Flare Portraits under the neon lights of the city. When shooting video, the Reno5’s Full Dimension Fusion Portrait Video System has you covered. This integrated feature automatically and greatly improves upon picture/video quality and portrait effects with innovative color and light processing. AI Highlight Video integrates OPPO’s Ultra Night Video and Live HDR to adjust to any lighting situation and automatically optimize human subjects. As such, video quality is accurate, bright, clear, and less noisy from both the front and rear cameras. AI Mixed Portrait meanwhile utilizes double exposure to combine portrait video with a background video of your choice. This first-of-its-kind technology on a smartphone ultimately creates an artistic and seamless blended video collage.
Battery
In terms of battery and charging, the Reno5 features a 4,310mAh battery paired with a 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 that gives your Reno5 5G up to 66% more peak power than regular 30W charging. The phone can charge up to 80% in just half-an-hour, and fully in about 48 minutes.
Smart features
In terms of smart features, the phone’s AI-enhanced Sensing Algorithm will trigger low-power consumption. This algorithm also enables touch-free functions on the Reno5, such as Smart Message Privacy (which will hide notifications from prying eyes) and Smart Always-on Display (which prevents the phone’s screen from abruptly dimming or closing when you are looking at it). Lastly, Smart AirControl lets the phone user answer or mute a call with simple hand gestures, or even scroll up and down on apps like Facebook and Instagram hands-free.
Verdict
The OPPO Reno5 5G is competitively priced at P23,999 while its sibling Reno5 (without the 5G connectivity) is priced at P18,999. There are quite a number of notable models in this price range and the Reno5 5G can definitely stand out among the pack with its powerful Snapdragon 765G processor, 64MP camera’s photo/video performance, and 90Hz high refresh rate for seamless phone operations such as gaming.
