OPPO has released another addition to its True Wireless Earphones lineup, the Enco W51. It features seven main specs, namely Active Noise Cancellation, Triple Microphone Noise Reduction, water and dust resistance, inductive tap controls, Bluetooth 5.0, long battery life, and wireless charging. We put all these to test so keep reading on to find out if these are worth buying.
The OPPO Enco W51 comes in Starry Blue and Floral White which is the model that we tested. It comes with a squarish glossy plastic case with rounded edges, has the OPPO logo etched on top, and weighs 55.5g. This feels more premium to me having tested OPPO’s Enco W31 TWS which felt more plasticky and less durable. The W51 also has a USB-C port on the back with an LED indicator.
When opened, the OPPO W51 has an LED indicator on top of the function button which is used to activate the Bluetooth. The earphones come packaged with medium-sized ear tips and there are three additional sizes included in the box: XS, S, and L to ensure the perfect snug fit that will prevent the earphones from falling out. Along with the ear tips, it also has a USB-C cable, Quick Use Guide and Safety Guide.
Hybrid Active Noise Cancellation and audio performance
The OPPO W51 comes equipped with a new dual-core digital noise reduction chip and more advanced hybrid noise reduction microphones. It’s optimized to detect and reduce external noises, such as a chicken’s call, car horn, or nearby people’s conversations. With a noise reduction depth of 35 dB, it’s expected to provide an undisturbed listening experience. However, this feature focuses more on eliminating low frequency sound and it isn’t as effective for higher frequencies. It mostly functioned as a noise reduction for most everyday noises which I would say was sufficient to keep me focused.
The W51’s are also the first true wireless earphones to be equipped with a system-wide audio quality compensation algorithm to avoid loss of audio quality through noise reduction techniques. The W51 offer quality restoration of the audio for clean, uncompromising audio performance. Additionally, the earphones are equipped with Dual TPU composite graphene diaphragms to provide enhanced audio response and treble performance. Its bass was pretty decent but still lacked punchiness.
Triple Microphone Noise Reduction for calls
Each earphone comes equipped with triple microphone noise reduction technology and redesigned air ducts to effectively reduce wind noise. Whether you are in the subway, on the bus, or riding your bike, even a single earphone will capture your voice clearly.
The OPPO W51 have achieved a unique breakthrough in noise reduction for both music and calls by coordinating a total of six microphones with a deep noise reduction algorithm. During calls I tested, the person on the other line could understand me clearly but the microphone could use improvement as I needed to speak louder for that person to hear me.
IP54 Dust and Water Resistance
The W51’s are structurally designed and certified for IP54 dust and water resistance. Whether at the gym or on an outdoor commute, listen with peace of mind knowing your earphones are safe from the elements.
Inductive tap controls
A series of operations, such as quick pairing to your phone, disconnecting, skipping songs, picking up and ending calls, and summoning the voice assistant can all be done by tapping your earphones. You can also customize tap control shortcuts for a more personalized experience for those with OPPO smartphones running ColorOS version 7.0 or higher.
- Tap left earphone twice: Noise Cancellation Switch
- Tap right earphone twice: Next Song / Answer Calls / Hang Up
- Tap three times on either earphone: Wakes the Voice Assistant
I found the tap controls a bit too sensitive since I often accidentally activated or deactivated the noise cancelling feature when yawning or simply fixing my hair.
Connectivity
The OPPO W51 are powered by Bluetooth 5.0 technology for faster and more stable audio transmission when faced with multiple sources of interference. They provide stable connection at up to 10 meters away for smooth music and calls even when your phone is not nearby.
The W51’s adopt the latest Bluetooth low-latency binaural transmission standard to greatly reduce any audio delay. This significantly improves audio-to-video synchronization, making audio lag and signal interference no longer an issue for your listening experience.
Battery
The W51 are OPPO’s first true wireless earphones that support Qi wireless charging. I can easily charge the earphone box wirelessly by simply placing it on a charging mat. This also worked with other wireless power banks.
A 15-minute charge keeps the W51’s on for 9 hours while a full charge lasts a full 24 hours. I can finally say goodbye to low-battery anxiety and worry less when I’m out or on a long haul flight.
Verdict
The OPPO Enco W51 retails at P3,690 and is available in all OPPO Concept Stores nationwide. The Enco W51 is more expensive than its sibling the Enco W31 which we described as a ‘bang’ for your buck in our review because of its Bass Mode and affordable price. However, the Enco W51 has its own strengths, specifically the long battery life, wireless charging, and the improved noise reductions while listening to music. The only room for improvement we could see would be maximizing the user’s voice while the earphones are noise-cancelling on a call.
