Review: Huawei nova 11 Pro

Nowadays, with the abundance of smartphones in the market, the challenge to tech brands is discovering ways to stand out. A good first impression is a must to pique the interest of potential buyers. I believe Huawei is headed towards that direction with the newly launched nova 11 Pro.

The latest from the nova series dons a unique monogram pattern — much like a designer bag if you’ll ask me. But beyond the flamboyant aesthetics, what other features does the nova 11 Pro have to get the youngsters hooked?

Design and build

Without a hint of doubt, Huawei has nailed its first impression score. Even with a fleeting glimpse, you’ll notice how the brand switched things up for the design of the nova 11 Pro. The premium feel of the vegan leather and unique nova monogram pattern stir up the perfect recipe for users’ tactile and visual wonder.

However, I believe that attraction to the green colorway is an acquired taste; its boldness may have a stronger appeal to the younger generations. Perhaps it could be a statement piece that’ll elevate the look of Gen Zs. If the loud design won’t cut it for you, the black colorway is an easily likeable option.

And of course, the camera layout remains to be a spectacle. Huawei calls it the Super Star Orbit Ring.

Another accomplished mix has something to do with its compact build and durability. On most days I prefer carrying a mini bag so the nova 11 Pro’s slim (7.88mm) and lightweight (188g) profile works to my advantage.

In terms of toughness, the front receives considerable protection from accidental drops. You have the Kunlun glass — new to the nova series — to thank for. Happy to report that there were no cracks after performing a few drop tests from a height of 1 meter.

Display

As mentioned earlier, the nova 11 Pro boasts a tough glass up front. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Impressively, upon booting up the device a vibrant 6.78-inch OLED curved display gives you a vibrant greeting. To add to that, running on 120Hz refresh rate, it was nothing but satisfying interacting with the breezy screen.

Altogether, the display features will provide users a smooth interaction as they spend hours browsing the internet, scrolling through social media, and streaming Netflix series, all while feeling engrossed by the large borderless display and stunning visual quality.

As much as we love creating content to flaunt on our socials, we love to consume them just as much. Fortunately, with the nova 11 Pro, we can easily satisfy our hunger for immersive content with the display’s color accuracy and sharpness.

Camera

The main event is Huawei’s Super Star — the dazzling dual camera setup. We have the 50MP Ultra Vision camera and the 8MP ultrawide camera.

The nova 11 Pro has a couple of tricks up its sleeve; one of which is the XD Portrait feature. After tinkering with the camera, I reckon it’s the smartphone’s strongest suit. You’ll instantly be wowed by shots taken in broad daylight. Images beautifully pop due to the vivid colors and rich details.

Portrait shots taken in low-light will offer users the same level of delight. First off, it was able to highlight the subject accurately, while letting the background fade away seamlessly. Secondly, despite shooting in a dark setting the photos were adeptly enhanced, delivering brightened photos with good contrast ratio and rich details.

It’ll be difficult to spot shots taken in good lighting versus dark scenarios.

Shooting at night has its charms and challenges. The fun part is you can add some drama to your shots and play around with night lights. But the tricky part is making sure you capture your photo in detail with little to no pesky noise. Turns out I barely had to lift a finger. The advanced light sensing capabilities did most of the work, brightening dark areas of images really well.

When vlogging or taking selfies during your solo travels, the 60MP ultrawide front camera will work its magic to capture the beautiful backdrops of places you visit. Shooting in 4K is also an option for you. This is your ticket to fame — stringing together snippets that look straight out from Pinterest, all for your next viral Instagram reel or TikTok video.

Meanwhile, the 8MP close-up portrait front camera wasn’t too shabby either. I personally fell for the flexible zoom range that could go from 0.7x to 5x. You can take group selfies or flaunt your stunning makeup. The best part? Quality seems to be consistent across different ranges. You’ll effortlessly slay the selfie given its wide dynamic range and crisp details.

Performance

Under the hood, you have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G processor powering the device; it also runs on 8GB of RAM. The fusion of the two translates to a smooth experience while switching apps and multitasking for typical users. For power users like gamers, you’ll find that the nova 11 Pro is a worthy companion to take on your next quest to become MVP. After running titles like Mobile Legends, we didn’t encounter any frame drops or lags even after sustained hours of gaming.

Since the device is built with 256GB of storage, you have a green light to download as many apps and take as many photos including safety shots as you’d like.

Battery

Similar to its predecessor, the nova 11 received a 4500mAh battery capacity. Its ample battery life can extend beyond your typical 9 to 5 use, allowing you to de-stress in-between and after work hours. This is paired with a 100W SuperCharge Turbo 2.0, which in my experience charged my phone to 50% in 10 minutes and 100% in 35 minutes (both with screens off), slightly varying from what the brand claims.

Verdict

It appears that Huawei achieved a clean sweep for nova 11 Pro as it excels in all fronts. That’s essential for Gen Zs living a multifaceted lifestyle. From its fashionable aesthetics and tough and vivid display, down to its superb camera features and excellent day-to-day performance, you’ve got all you need in a pocketable device.

Given what it brings to the table, it’s quite easy to overlook the absence of google services. Besides, AppGallery and Petal Search offer the next best thing. Essentially, all your favorite apps are just as accessible.

Everything considered, for PHP 33,999, the Huawei nova 11 Pro is a solid pick for young creators and professionals looking to produce quality content and improve their craft.

The nova 11 series is now open for pre-order (bonus: it comes with freebies). Prices are as follows:
